HOW TO MAKE DELICIOUS TURKEY WINGS THAT ARE SLOW-COOKED

Turkey wings are tasty food. This turkey recipe article discusses how to make this food, delicious turkey wings in a slow cooker. This slow cooked turkey is scrumptious home cooking. Slow-cooked turkey wings are a decadent food. So, how do you cook appetizing turkey wings in the slow cooker? With this slow cooker recipe for how to make delicious turkey wings, of course!

This particular how to make slow cooker turkey wings recipe will show you how to make a relatively easy preparation for very delicious slow cooked turkey wings!

  • When we have turkey as one of the foods on Thanksgiving Day, my favorite part of the turkey is the wing, for some reason.
  • I like how the turkey wing locks in flavor. Slow cooked turkey wings are a very appealing food.
  • During the rest of the year, I don't have much of an appetite for turkey—unless it's a good turkey wing.
  • Slow cooked turkey wings are a huge, plentiful portion of food and just one turkey wing can easily be shared among a few people.
  • To achieve that, however, you have to cut adequate meat off of the turkey wing bone and not allow any of the turkey meat to be wasted.
  • Because turkey wings are so big, it can be tricky to cook the turkey wings evenly.
  • You might end up with the turkey wing meat becoming tough instead of tender—and if that is the case, indeed some of the turkey wing meat might stay on the bone and be wasted.
  • I think that the best way to cook a turkey wing is to make the turkey wing slowcooked in the slow cooker.
  • If you are someone who eats meat such as turkey, chicken, lamb and beef and likes the meat to be very tender and juicy, falling off the bone, then a slow cooker is a good investment.
  • This particular slow cooker recipe for how to make turkey wings should suit you well.

I hope that you enjoy this how to make slow-cooked turkey wings recipe as much as I do! This is some delicious food!

Slowcooked turkey wings

1. Ingredients for slow cooker recipe for turkey wings

  • 2 fresh or thawed turkey wings
  • Seasonings (see below)
  • Chicken or turkey stock (optional)

2. Directions for how to make turkey wings in the slow cooker

  1. To make these slow cooked turkey wings, take the turkey wings, rinse them well with water, and pat dry.
  2. Season the turkey wings very generously with a variety of seasonings. I never use just salt and pepper for these slow cooked turkey wings but rather a multitude of seasonings in order to get very flavorful tasting turkey wing meat. (Hey, if Kentucky Fried Chicken, aka KFC, can use 13 special herbs and spices, why not me?)
  3. If you have time, let the turkey wings sit and absorb the spices. Place the turkey wings in a bowl covered with plastic wrap and keep the bowl of turkey wings on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator a couple of hours before cooking. This can aid with attaining the most flavorful results for the slowcooked turkey wings.
  4. After the turkey wings have been washed, seasoned, and possibly marinated, place the turkey wings side by side into the slow cooker.
  5. Add a cup of water or canned soup for reduction. Note that in a slow cooker, you will need less liquid than you will for the stove top. In the slow cooker, the water does not evaporate as readily.
  6. Cover the slow cooker, plug it in, and set it on high for 2 to 3 hours. Reduce it to low for an additional 5 to 6 hours.
  7. When the time is up, take the turkey wings out and enjoy!

Yes, the total cooking time for these slow cooked turkey wings is seven to nine hours. Slow cookers allow for easy cleanup and minimal supervision, so you can leave your slow cooked turkey wings meal cooking and go about doing other things.

There is no need to be on constant watch for burning or scorching of the slow cooked turkey wings or to be stirring them frequently.

  • The turkey wing meat comes out extremely succulent and tender and just a few meals that good are worth the $20 paid for the slow cooker.
  • I give this kitchen appliance, a slow cooker, two thumbs up!

Instructions

Seasoning to prepare slow cooked turkey wings

I suggest using a combination of at least six of the following seasonings to prepare these slow cooked turkey wings.:

  • Garlic
  • Parsley
  • Oregano
  • Thyme
  • Ginger
  • Black pepper
  • Red pepper
  • Paprika
  • Salt

On the slow cooked turkey wings, I use all of these seasonings with black pepper, garlic, and parsley in the greatest abundance.

I've also enjoyed working with fresh seasonings and suggest you add some fresh chopped raw onion and fresh minced raw garlic cloves three quarters of the way through the cooking process of the slow cooked turkey wings. You will yield even better results for the slow cooked turkey wings.

  • Additionally, when all is complete, the fully cooked turkey wings will taste great with a topping such as a gravy or pesto—yes, pesto.
  • I typically prepare turkey gravy only around Thanksgiving Day or New Year's Day, and I do so using the turkey giblets from a whole raw turkey that I am preparing.
  • At other times during the year, however (when I am preparing turkey wings only and not a whole turkey), I might just use pesto for a delicious, quick and easy topping for the slowcooked turkey wings.
  • Pesto is so delicious, and the Classico brand makes a great store-bought option when you don't have time to make your own.
  • Made with basil, olive oil, Parmesan cheese and yeast among other ingredients, pesto is often a suggested topping for chicken.
  • I love to eat chicken with pesto and it tastes great with other meats too, including these slow cooked turkey wings.

You can purchase a slowcooker for just around $20

We are behind the times, I know, but I was delighted when my husband randomly brought home a slow cooker the other day. Not so random, I guess. We had been talking about purchasing one for a while now.

The thing with these type of appliances, is that if you wait a while, when they are no longer new on the market (when they are new is the time when everyone wants to grab one up), then the price goes way down later. Our slow cooker was purchased for just $20.

This turkey meal is the first I prepared with it, the first of many meals to come.

If you too are using a slow cooker for the first time, it is important to read your instruction manual carefully.

Here are some tips:

  • Keep the slow cooker on a heat resistant surface when in use and far away from the stove, gas oven or other heated kitchen appliances that might be in use.
  • Remove the ceramic container inside, rinse thoroughly with soapy water, dry well and place back into the unit before you begin.
  • Do not put any frozen or very cold food into the slow cooker, and when the meal is complete, do not store leftovers in the refrigerator in the slow cooker itself.
  • After you remove all food, wash and dry the inner ceramic container and store the leftover food in a plastic container or tupperware.

Hi Charmaine, thanks so much for stopping by and posting your question. I don't usually work with smoked meats but I think you would be able to add less seasoning because the smoked meat will be more flavorful. For example, you can probably reduce added salt significantly. I think that you can use less of all the various herbs and spices to suit your taste.

Charmaine on April 25, 2012:

If I use thawed SMOKED turkey wings do I need to use the same amount of seasoning? (Herbs & Spices)

Nyesha Pagnou MPH (author) from USA on March 05, 2012:

Thanks to everyone who posted the most recent comments since I last stopped by to moderate. Sorry, I've been away so long.

Linda, I'm glad my hub showed up close to the top in the google search. That's awesome. I'm glad you like this hub. I hope it's helpful to you.

You're welcome Hamilton...I think you will enjoy it.

Monique, unfortunately one slow cooker will not hold that many wings but many people use slow cookers so frequently and for so many dishes, they have two or three working side by side on their kitchen countertops right next to the toaster and the microwave oven. :-) If you are thinking about it, you might try having 2 slow cookers/crockpots instead of just one.

Speaking of so many dishes, I have not yet tried cake baked in the crock pot but I have heard about it. Thanks for reminding me Blair Rockefeller. Good luck with your diet and thanks for complimenting this article. :-)

Blair Rockefeller from Atlanta, Georgia on January 23, 2011:

I'm a big fan of the slow cooker (crock pot)

I even make a great cake in one. I'm dieting now so I'm not eating that now. But I will make one soon for everyone else. Nice article.

Very interesting recipe! I'm wondering (since I'm cooking for a family of four) if you have suggestions on how to modify this recipe for probably 4-8 turkey wings? Thanks!

Never cooked Turkey before in a crock-pot, I will see how it compares to a Smoked Turkey or Deep-Fried Turkey. Thanks for the recipe.

Sounds good. My fav part of the turkey is the wings. I've tried chicken wings in the slow cooker but had the problem of the meat falling right off the bone. I might have cooked them too long.

Nyesha Pagnou MPH (author) from USA on May 04, 2009:

That's great Peggy, glad you liked it.

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on April 01, 2009:

Just checked out the other recipe. Sounds good also. Thanks!

Nyesha Pagnou MPH (author) from USA on April 01, 2009:

Hi Peggy W, thanks for posting my first comment on this hub! I sure do use chicken wings at times. I use my slow cooker most of the time now, for various types of meats. Here's an oven baked chicken recipe from before getting a slow cooker. I still like to prepare the chicken this way too: https://hubpages.com/food/A-Great-Party-Food--How-...

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on April 01, 2009:

This sounds good. Have you ever tried substituting chicken wings? Just curious...
