Me and my mom are trying to figure out what 5/8 of a cup means in baking . What does 5/8 of a cup mean?

  • It’s a half cup plus two tablespoons approximately.I have never heard of a recipe calling for such an odd amount.Usually they try to make things easy by using 1/4,1/2,3/4 etc.I am sure you have double checked the recipe so the amount I gave should be as close as you can get without a 1/8 cup measure to add to the 1/2 cup measure.

  • That means if you divide one cup into 8 parts, you’ll need 5 of the 8 parts to use in the recipe. If you have a 1/8 cup measuring cup, use 5 scoops OR 5 pours of the ingredient.

  • it’s 1/2 a cup + 1/8 of a cup

  • 5/8 cup is 1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon.

  • I have baked for many years, I have never heard of a 5/8 cup of flour. Learn something new every day.

  • 1/8th cup is 1 Tablespoon, so 5/8 ths cup is 5 tablespoons. (We are talking about standard measuring tablespoons.) So the easy way is to measure out 1/2 cup of your flour or whatever and then add 1 more tablespoon.

  • Well 4/8th would be exactly half so just a little bit more than half a cup.

  • well if you were to divide the cup into eight equal parts, you would only use 5 so it’s a little less then a cup. 🙂

    Source(s): bake a lot. math.

  • Get a ruler in your hands. Measure things until you start to understand how a ruler works. Measure some stuff and figure out where the center is. Say you measure a book and it’s 7/8″ thick. You look at your ruler and see that every eighth is divided into two sixteenths, so obviously half of 7/8″ is going to be 7/16″. If you write that out you have 1/2 x 7/8 = 7/16. And you notice that 1/2 is divided into 2/4 and then into 4/8 and so on, so you can convert anything to anything by multiplying all the numbers on top and then all the numbers on bottom. Other rulers are divided into 10 and 100 parts. But an inch is still and inch, so anything on one ruler can be translated to the other ruler. A half inch on one ruler is 5/10 or 50/100 on the other. An eighth inch is just 12.5 marks when you have 100 marks per inch. A metric ruler divides an inch into 25.4 parts, so a half inch would be 12.7 of those parts. Pretty simple, isn’t it? Practice this a bit and people will think you went to wizard school. Your recipe calls for 1/2 tsp per cup and you are using 5/8 cup so you want half of 5/8 which is, looking at the ruler, 5/16 tsp. If you want to look swashbuckling, dump 1 tsp on a small mirror and use a razor blade to divide it into eight equal piles, then combine five of those piles to get 5/8 tsp and divide that into two equal parts: 5/16 tsp each!
