1. Press the reset button

The easiest way to reset your Whirlpool ice maker is to press the reset button. Depending on your specific refrigerator model, there should be a reset button on the ice maker. All you need to do is find the button and press it. Once you press the button, the ice maker unit will fully reset and will hopefully start to work again.

To reset your ice maker, you simply need to:

  1. Locate the reset button. The reset button is usually located at the bottom of the ice maker unit or in some cases at the top or on the bottom of the ice tray.
  2. Once located, press the button down for a few seconds until you hear a beep sound. Once you hear the beep sound, let go of the button.
  3. Once reset, check if the problem has been solved.

Adjust the feeler arm

Another way to reset your Whirlpool ice maker is to adjust the feeler arm. The feeler arm is a sensor that is inside your ice maker, and its purpose is to monitor how much ice the ice maker is making. When it deems the ice tray is full, it tells the control board to stop making ice. Sometimes the feeler arm can become stuck, and this stops it from working properly, so you’ll need to loosen it before it can start working again.

Here’s how to adjust the feeler arm:

  1. Locate the feeler arm in your ice maker (consult your user manual if required).
  2. Once located, push the feeler arm down. This should loosen it and stop it from being stuck or frozen in place.
  3. Once you’ve loosened the feeler arm, the ice maker should start to fill up with water again.

3. Press the on/off switch

If pressing the reset button and/or adjusting the feeler arm didn’t get your Whirlpool ice maker to work, the next option is to turn your ice maker off by pressing the on/off switch.

Here’s how to reset your ice maker by turning it off and on:

  1. Locate the on/off switch. You should be able to find it under the ice tray.
  2. Once located, remove the ice tray, and if it has a cover plate, remove that as well.
  3. Turn the switch off. Wait a few minutes before turning it back on again.
  4. Once you’ve switched it back on, you can put the ice tray and cover back into your ice maker.
  5. Check to see if the problem has been solved; if not, you’ll need to try to turn the whole appliance off and on (see below).

4. Unplug your refrigerator

If the first 3 options didn’t reset your ice maker and get it to start working again, your final option is to unplug your refrigerator and reset the whole unit.

To reset your refrigerator, you need to:

  1. Unplug your fridge. You might need to pull it out from the wall to access the plug.
  2. Wait about 10 minutes and then plug it back into the power socket again.
  3. Once it is turned back on, locate the feeler arm and press it down a couple of times. Once you do this, the ice tray should fill up with water, and ice should start to be produced again.

What if my ice maker still hasn’t reset?

If you’ve gone through the 4 options above and your ice maker still doesn’t work, this might indicate your fridge has a bigger issue, such as a mechanical problem, an electrical issue, or a faulty water valve. To fix these problems, you will need to call a qualified technician to come and inspect your Whirlpool refrigerator, as they are difficult to repair without the right tools and knowledge.

Though it may seem far away, the heat of summer is fast approaching. That’s why if you find your Whirlpool French door refrigerator not making ice, some rapid troubleshooting is needed before warmer days arrive. From making sure the ice maker is turned on to checking water supply issues, here’s how to have ice at the ready.

Whirlpool French Door Refrigerator Not Making Ice? This Could Solve the Problem

Sometimes there’s a simple DIY fix for a French door refrigerator ice maker not working. These top 5 causes will show you how to solve the problem or when to call for a professional assessment.

#1. Whirlpool Ice Maker Isn’t Turned On

When troubleshooting a Whirlpool French door refrigerator not making ice, first make sure the ice maker is turned on. Oftentimes this can be the problem when you find your Whirlpool ice maker not working but water dispenser is still functioning. Locate the ice maker power switch and make sure it’s in the ON position.

Some newer models no longer use a power switch on the ice maker itself though. Instead, these refrigerators use electronic controls to manage the power supply. If you cannot find a power switch on your model, refer to your model’s use and care guide. It will show you how to turn the ice maker on or off using the electronic controls.

#2. Improper Whirlpool Freezer Temperature

A Whirlpool refrigerator not making ice may come down to incorrect temperature settings. For proper ice production, the freezer should be set between 0-5°F. If the temperature is too warm, ice may not adequately freeze and can appear smaller or misshapen. Meanwhile, temperatures below 0°F could create a buildup of ice and frost that prohibits ice from ejecting.

#3. Whirlpool Ice Maker is Jammed

Ice jams are a common reason for a Whirlpool French door refrigerator not making ice. Often, ice may not be completely frozen when it emerges from the icemaker. When this slushy water remains on the ejector arm and accumulates over time it can cause the ice maker to jam, preventing new ice from falling.

If your Whirlpool ice maker not dumping ice is due to a jam, the buildup needs to be cleared for ice production to resume. To clear ice from the ejector arm, carefully chip away at it with a plastic utensil. Avoid using metal utensils that can damage the ice maker.

#4. Water Supply Issues

In other instances, your a Whirlpool ice maker not making ice may be due to insufficient water supply. A clogged water filter, kinked water line hose, or defective water inlet valve can restrict the water flowing to an ice maker. When this happens, ice production will be limited or completely stop. Here’s how to address water supply issues that can affect ice production:

  • Change your refrigerator water filter. This should be done every 6 months to prevent clogs.
  • Assess the refrigerator’s water line for kinks. Carefully straighten any kinks and avoid others by making sure the refrigerator isn’t pushed too closely against the wall.
  • Schedule a professional repair to replace a defective water inlet valve

Why does my water dispenser work but not my ice maker?

If the water inlet valve is defective, or if it has insufficient pressure, it won't allow water to flow through. As a result, the ice maker won't make ice. The valve requires at least 20 psi to function properly. Make sure that the water pressure to the valve is at least 20 psi.

Why won't my Whirlpool ice maker fill with water?

Make sure that the water pressure to the valve is at least 20 psi. If the water pressure is sufficient, use a multimeter to check for power to the water inlet valve. If the water inlet valve has sufficient pressure and is getting power, but the ice maker won't fill with water to make ice, replace the water inlet valve.

What tells the icemaker to fill with water?

Once the ice maker has been connected to a power and water source (aka the plumbing line connected to the back of your refrigerator), the ice maker cycle should begin automatically. At the beginning of the cycle, an electrical signal is sent to a water valve to fill the ice mold with water.

How do I reset my Whirlpool ice maker?

The reset button is usually located at the bottom of the ice maker unit or in some cases at the top or on the bottom of the ice tray. Once located, press the button down for a few seconds until you hear a beep sound. Once you hear the beep sound, let go of the button. Once reset, check if the problem has been solved.
