How to pair apple earbuds to iphone

Rumors had long been swirling around the announcement of Apple's new AirPods, the popular Bluetooth headphones that allow listeners to tune out the outside world.

The AirPods Pro 2 or AirPods Pro 2nd Generation headphones were announced Wednesday, September 7 at an Apple event, alongside the new iPhone 14.  

In honor of the debut of the next generation of AirPods, here's everything you need to know about the device, and some helpful AirPod tips including how to connect to various devices (Apple and otherwise) and how to silence those pesky read-aloud texts. 

What to know about the new AirPods Pro (2nd Generation):

  • These headphones share the same noise-cancelling model at the first generation of AirPods Pro
  • Customers can pre-order AirPods Pro on Sept. 9, they formally launch on Sept. 23.
  • They will cost $249, Apple says. 
  • The new earbuds will allow users to adjust volume by swiping up and down along the side of the stem.
  • The new AirPods Pro can support up to 30 hours of listening time , if you are recharging them periodically in their case.
  • A speaker has been added to the AirPod case to play a noise indicating when they're lost or low  on battery.
  • The new AirPods Pro case will be able to charge using an Apple Watch charger.
  • The noise cancellation mode will be twice as good as the first generation of AirPods Pro, Apple says. 

How to connect AirPods: 

The pairing process for the Bluetooth headphones varies depending on the device you want to connect them to. 

Connect AirPods to a Macbook: 

  1. Open the case with your AirPods inside and make sure you are near your device. 
  2. Press down and hold the setup button on the back of your case. The light will flash white. 
  3. On your computer go unto the Apple menu, select System Preferences, and select Bluetooth. 
  4. In the list of devices available to pair, choose your AirPods and they should connect.

Connect AirPods to a Dell Laptop: 

  1. On a Dell laptop, the pairing process is similar. Press and hold the setup button on your AirPod case. 
  2. Got to Action Center, then select Settings, and click on Bluetooth & other devices.
  3. Click "Add Bluetooth & other devices"
  4. Your AirPods should show up on the eligible devices list, you can click on them and they should connect. 

Connect AirPods to an Android: 

  1. On your phone open Settings, elect Connected Devices, then Bluetooth. 
  2. Open your AirPods case, hold it near your phone, and press the setup button.
  3. Your AirPods should pop up as an available device, when they do click "Pair," and they will connect. 

Note: On an iPhone, when you open your case near the device, a pop-up will appear on your screen and you should be able to choose "connect" for an automatic pairing. If this doesn't work, the same process for an Android can be used to pair the headphones manually. 

How to reset AirPods: 

If your AirPods are experiencing technical difficulties, it might be wise to reset them. To reset them:

  1. Put both earbuds in their case and close the lid. 
  2. Wait 30 or so seconds.
  3. Open the case. 
  4. On your phone or computer (whatever device they are connected to), go to Settings then choose Bluetooth and click the "More Info" button next to your AirPods.
  5. Choose "Forget this Device." 
  6. Open the lid, press and hold down the setup button for about 15 or so seconds, the light should flash amber, then turn white. 
  7. They are now reset. Begin the pairing process again to connect them. 

How to stop AirPods from reading texts:

  1. Open settings on your phone. 
  2. Choose "Notifications."
  3. Under the Siri section, elect "Announce Notifications."
  4. If your phone shows the lever to be green, and indicates this setting is on, tap it so that the bar is gray. 

How long do AirPods last?

Business Insider reports that AirPods battery should last up to 24 hours if they've been left charging in their case the night prior. 

Total battery life varies depending on the model, but generally the Bluetooth headphones can last on their own for five hours of listening (music, podcasts, etc.) and 3.5 hours of talk time (phone conversations.) 

Tech reviewing website Headphone Honesty reports that your AirPods usually last about two to three years before users feel the need to purchase new ones. The short lifespan is due in part to the lithium ion battery. 

How to check AirPod battery

This depends on your device. '

On an iPhone or iPad: Open the lid of your case and a pop-up should appear displaying the amount of charge in both each of the earbuds and the case. You can also use the Batteries widget, which will show your phone's charge and 

On a Mac: Open the lid of your case, click the "Bluetooth" icon on your menu, a drop down should appear showing your devices, if you click on or hover above your AirPods the charge amount in both the case and each of the earbuds should appear. 

Can you track AirPods

Yes. Just like an iPhone, your AirPods can be tracked, but they have to be in the case. An individual AirPod cannot be tracked. 

You can use the "Find My" feature on your iPhone to track the case on a map and if they're lost somewhere in your couch, you can have them play a sound to better locate them. If your AirPods are not already set up in the Find My app, however, you won't be able to use this feature to locate them. 

To play a sound:

  1. Open the Find My app on your phone. 
  2. Select "Devices."
  3. Choose your AirPods from the list of available devices. 
  4. Select Play Sound to play a sound that gets louder and louder. 

How do you put Apple earbuds in pairing mode?

If you have an Android device, go to Settings > Connections > Bluetooth. With your AirPods in the charging case, open the lid. Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case until the status light flashes white. When your AirPods appear in the list of Bluetooth devices, select them.

Why won't my iPhone recognize my Apple earbuds?

If you can't connect to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch Put both AirPods in the charging case and make sure that both AirPods are charging. To make sure that Bluetooth is on, go to Settings > Bluetooth. If your AirPods are connected, make sure that they're selected as your audio device.
