How do I get rid of tree shoots growing from an old stump?

How to get rid of tree offshoots

QI had a tree cut down two years ago and left the stump in situ. However, it is shooting up everywhere. I keep cutting the branches but more keep coming up. Is there something I can put on it?

Julie

AYes, apply a stump-killing herbicide to the shoots when you cut them. You can use a general herbicide that kills all vegetation, or look for a special tree stump and root killer.

You need something that contains glyphosate or trichlopyr – these will enter the tree’s system and be taken down to the roots to kill them. It may take repeated applications for this to work, but stick with it.

How do you stop roots from sprouting?

Prevent root suckers by staying away from the trunk or roots of the tree with a lawn mower or string trimmer. Consider adding an island of mulch around the tree base to protect the roots and to avoid mowing under the tree. Expand the mulch island over time as the tree's size and root spread increase.

Will vinegar kill tree roots?

Vinegar works in getting rid of tree roots because its high acidity will burn through leaves and tree roots. Vinegar also works well since it's in a liquid form. The tree roots will drink the vinegar, just like they drink water.
