I have been thinking of changing from a two-up ATV to a 50" UTV for a while.
Soooo, which 50" UTV?

Arctic Cat (Textron) doesn't make the Wildcat Trail anymore. Polaris has a Fox Edition of the 900 Trail this year that should have better suspension. Can Am has a Triple Black colored Maverick Trail DPS that looks pretty good. They both cost exactly the same. They are both 1000 cc, and both make 75 hp. Any reason to buy one of these over the other?

We rented a 50" Rzr from Nathan at Rose Ranch Resort a few years ago and that was enough for me to decide there wouldn't be a Rzr in my future.  Last year, we rented a 50" Can Am Trail from Rose Ranch and my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it.  The ride and ground clearance were far superior in my opinion and we seriously thought about getting one since we love the 50" trails.  I think the wheelbase is a little longer than the Rzr and we did have to back up on a couple sharp turns on the Anderson Dairy Trail but other than that, it did great. Instead, we decided to keep the quads for the 50" trails and bought a Can Am 64" Rock Crawler for the other trails.  Now, we find it hard to park the RC to take the quads out because it's so much fun to drive.  

You should rent a Can Am Trail from Nathan for a day (or half day) to see for yourself.

I have a 50" RZR 800. Can't beat it when I take my wife along. Wish it had a smoother ride though. I was amazed how well you and your lovely wife rode that two up on our last ride at Sand Hollow. That said, I do think you are on the right track at getting her the protection of a roll cage.

Thanks for the replies so far.   The trail we were on yesterday on the Arapeen was much more difficult than the climb up the Honeymoon Trail we did in Sand Hollow.  We probably shouldn't have been on it with two people on the ATV.  Next time ... pay heed to that big sign at the start of the trail that says "Ride At Your Own Risk".  

To those that have driven both the Rzr 900 Trail and the Maverick Trail, ... is there a difference in comfort between these two machines?  The Rzr 900 feels quite cramped in the cab, and I'm wondering if the Maverick Trail is better in that regard.

The Rzr we rented from Nathan was a 570 so I can't speak for the 900.  I just remember we bottomed out on every gate with a rebar hump and dang near every water diversion hump on the Anderson Dairy and Max Reid trails.  Our mineral intake was off the chart though with all the dust we ate inside the cab.  

As far as comfort, The Can Am beat the Rzr hands down.

I might be comparing apples to oranges here.  When I owned a CAM AM Outkander Max, I swore it would be the last Can Am I'd ever own.   Worst ATV I ever worked on.  When I did work on it, I would curse all the engineers that worked on the design.   I thought about purchasing a new 50 inch mythos fall.  Read all about the Can Am, I was impressed, but then I started remembering all those thoughts I had when I worked on my Can Am.  Not a chance again.  As for space inside the RZR, I'm 6ft 250lbs, I don't feel cramped in my 900 Trail at all.

Thanks for clarifying. It makes sense that you were a little underwhelmed by a 570. The 900 was a big upgrade over the 800, and pretty much everything on the 900 is better than the 800. While the 570 is pretty much a kids UTV version of the old 800.

No question what I would recommend. I am trying to get the dear wife to agree to a RZR 900 to replace the 800. The cab seems bigger and the horsepower to weight ratio is pretty close to the XP1000 - as in more power than you need. And it is good looking.
Make the change - you will never look back with anything but pleasure at your decision.

Thanks George. I made pretty much the same progression from dirt bikes to ATV's to UTV's. But I have been holding on to ATVs for the 50" trails. It was an eye opener this weekend to see how much I was putting my wife in harms way though. I had not realized that you really couldn't get off of the back seat of our 2-up ATV in an emergency.

My dad stopped by my house yesterday, and he has previously owned a Rzr 900 Trail, and now owns a Maverick Trail. So I talked to him about a 50" UTV, and asked him which one he would buy. He said he would buy a Rzr 900 Trail if he were buying today. His main complaint with the Maverick Trail is heat in the cab, and that it is very hard to work on compared to the Rzr. He does think it rides just slightly better because of the longer wheelbase. Power is the same, but clutch engagement on the Maverick Trail is just a little smoother than on the Rzr. He told me I needed to test drive them both though.

Sounds like BRP still likes to make an easy job harder than it should be.  That Maverick would have to ride like a Cadillac before I'd purchase another Can Am over a RZR.  Personally I keep praying for a 50" Yamaha.

We had a 2008 50" 800 for 8 years. No problems whatsoever. We now have a 2016 900 Trail Fox Edition. It's a totally different machine than the 800. After busting the OEM skid at Taylor Park I added a little more preload to the shocks for more ground clearance and added a Tusk skid. I've just put some 27/9R12 Kenda Bear Claw HTRs on it. It now has 11 1/2" of clearance. I don't know anything about the Can Am but I don't have anything bad to say about the RZRs.

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping someone with a Fox Edition would see this. What do you think about the suspension on that Fox Edition? Does yours have the 24 position adjustment? I don't plan on driving fast or doing any jumps. But I would like to know if you can dial it in so that it rides fairly plush on rocky trails?

I had planned on doing 27" tires as well, probably ITP Mud Lite XTR radials, in a 27x9R-12 size. Any tire rub with that size tire on stock wheels?

I saw where the 2020 fox edition has 24 position adjustment. I assume they're talking about the dampening adjustment on the reservoirs. My 2016 only has about 12 or 16 positions IIRC. The preload is adjusted by screwing the rings down on the shock body with the supplied spanner wrench. I gave it more preload and softened the dampening. I wouldn't call the ride plush but it's not bad. I haven't experienced any tire rub with the 27s on the stock wheels. Check the actual measurements on any tires your considering. They don't always run true to size.

Well I stand corrected. I found a UTV Action Magazine online review of the Fox Edition from Sept. 2017 and they specified Fox podium x 2.0 shocks with 24 positions for compression/dampening. I would say the shocks on the 2020 are the same thing that's on my "16".

I just placed an order for one. The Fox Edition is truly a "limited edition", and will only be produced in one production run this year. Dealers have a one time allotment to order how many they want. I will be getting one from Jorgensen's in Richfield. They ordered 22 of them to last them through the next year.  The first one's should start showing up "any time now".

If you're looking for plushness on the rocky trails, I believe one of the things a lot of people do to get there is to remove the sway bar from these 50" UTVs.  You get more body roll in the corners, but it gives your suspension a lot more independent articulation.

I've been looking at the Polaris RZR 50" Trail model as well.  I saw in some older threads people saying that they are actually a little wider than 50".  Do you have any concerns about getting through any of the gates or getting ticketed by a Ranger on the Paiute?

I agree, disconnecting the swaybar makes a big difference.  I disconnected the swaybar on my last X3 RS, and it was the king of plush.  I'm not sure disconnecting the swaybar on a 50" Rzr is a good idea though.  I'll have to wait and see how it is, and try it both ways.

No, I'm not worried about it.  I see them on the Paiute all the time.

Update:  I just found out the expected ship date is between September 24th and October 10th.  

Took my front sway bar off.  Never looked back.  It'll be the first thing taken off when I have to replace my RZR with another one.

Went over to the dealer and picked it up today.  Here we are getting ready to leave the dealership and head home.

I think the Fox Edition Rzr looks real sharp this year with the blue color.  We are going to go over to Otter Creek and try it out tomorrow.

I think the two machines are equal on most things, such as horsepower, suspension travel, ground clearance, etc.  But the Can Am Trail has more problems with heat in the cab, is a little harder to work on, and does not have a special edition with better suspension.  Polaris offers the Rzr Trail Fox Edition with 24 position adjustable Fox shocks, and lower doors, and it only cost something like $200 more than a regular Rzr Trail.  So it is a pretty good bargain.  I had the chance to drive my Dad's Maverick trail, and the suspension sure wasn't anything to brag about. To get a Maverick trail with Elka's would have been $3000 more.  Plus, I asked my Dad which one he would buy.  He has owned both a Rzr 900 Trail, and a Maverick 1000 Trail, and he currently owns the Maverick.  He didn't even hesitate, he said to get the Rzr 900.

So in the end, I thought they would both work pretty good, but the Fox Edition availability on the Rzr led me to buy that one.

Keep us posted after you break this machine in. I may be in the market for a 2 seater, but the standard RZR suspension is horrible, IMHO..

Will do.  I put 60 miles on it Sunday, on the Paiute.  My first impression was that the suspension was too stiff.  So I backed off the compression damping to full soft.  Each shock was set differently from the factory, with one shock needing to be backed off 6 clicks, another shock needing to be backed off 13 clicks, and the other two shocks somewhere in between.  Softening the compression damping made a big improvement, and there is still plenty of bottoming resistance.  I still have more tuning to do.  I want to try 8 psi in the tires instead of the 10 psi I had on the first ride.  Then I want to try disconnecting the front sway bar to see how it feels that way.

Yesterday, when I got to thinking the little Rzr rode too rough, I had something happen that made me rethink that.  We went riding with another couple that were in a Wildcat Sport, that had been owned previously by the owner of D&P Performance.  That UTV was tricked out with aftermarket cage, bumpers, tires, wheels, ... and, ... stage V Elka's.  When we got back to the trucks, that were parked at the bottom of trail 63, I was thinking that that trail seemed pretty rough.  Then the couple in the Wildcat pulled up, and the driver got out and the first words out of his mouth were "that was a rough one".  Ok, then I didn't feel so bad about the little Rzr if a UTV with twice the suspension travel, and stage V Elka's thought the trail was rough as well.

I'll give it more time, and try a little more tuning, then decide what I think.  It sure isn't an X3 XRC though

Two years has gone by since I bought the Rzr 900 Trail Fox Edition.  In those two years I have used the Polaris Rzr 900 Trail for a year, and then switched to a Can Am Maverick Trail DPS 1000, and used it for a year as well.  In my opinion the Maverick Trail is a better built and higher quality machine.  It is smoother running, with less noise, harmonics, and vibration.  Build quality is better.  Suspension is actually a little better on the Can Am than on the Polaris Fox Edition, which was just too stiff riding at all times.  Roominess in the cockpit is significantly better in the Can Am, so rider comfort during a long day on the trail is significantly better.

So, after two years, and using both machines, I would recommend the Can Am Maverick Trail.
