Ascension providence msuchm program internal medicine residency
The objectives of the Ascension St. John Internal Medicine Residency Program are to provide high quality graduate medical education, in a supervised and an academic atmosphere that prepares the resident physician to practice comprehensive, scientific, safe, and cost-effective Internal Medicine. Training revolves around the mission of Ascension Southeast Michigan Health to provide patient centered, safe, and compassionate care.

This is accomplished by achieving milestones based training, utilizing the six core competencies as outlined by the ACGME , Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, Interpersonal and Communication Skill, Professionalism, Practice Based Learning & Improvement and System Based Practice. It is our goal that at the end of residency, the graduate of the residency program is a superior internist who is well prepared for the next phase of his/her career in general internal medicine, hospital medicine, or further subspecialty fellowship training.

Our program is under the direction of the Chief of Medicine and the Program Director, with a sizeable General Medicine and subspecialty faculty. There are 21 categorical residents in each academic year, 3 preliminary 1 year R1 residents, and 3 Chief Residents. Annually, all faculty are involved with the organization and implementation of the I.M. teaching program. Residents achieve training in the subspecialties of Internal Medicine supervised by subspecialty faculty, including in Allergy-Immunology, Cardiology, Critical Care, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Hematology/Oncology, Palliative Care, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Neurology, Pulmonary Medicine and Rheumatology. The medical staff is committed to sharing patient care responsibilities and contributing to the teaching program. Residents are enriched by working with a medical staff who is committed to Graduate Medical Education.
