Who played 067 in squid game

Squid Game’s Kang Sae-byeok, aka player 067, is one of the Netflix show’s most memorable characters, so who plays them and what else have they done?

One of the most memorable characters in Netflix’s Korean drama series Squid Game is North Korean defector Kang Sae-byeok a.k.a. player 067, but who plays them? Squid Game, which released on Netflix on September 21, 2021, puts hundreds of highly desperate and indebted people against each other in a series of playground games for children. In each game, the price for losing is death. The series echoes familiar themes of other survival dramas within the genre, such as The Hunger Games and Battle Royale.

In Squid Game, player 067 is Kang Sae-byeok; resilient and resourceful, she is the ultimate survivor for many. Sae-byeok and her younger brother Cheol made it out of North Korea but had to leave their mother behind. Her brother Choel is currently in an orphanage because Sae-byeok can’t support them both. If she wins, she plans to use the money to buy a house for her family and get her mother out of North Korea.

The person who plays 067 in Squid Game is 27-year-old South Korean model HoYeon Jung. Prior to the Netflix Korean Drama, Jung was dubbed “Korea’s next top model” [via Vogue] after coming second on the Korean incarnation of America’s Next Top Model. Since appearing on the show, Jung has featured on the cover of magazines like Vogue Korea, Vogue Japan, CR Fashion Book, and Harper’s Bazar Korea. She has also appeared for designers such as Tory Burch, Prabal Gurung, Jeremy Scott, and Roberto Cavalli. Jung is represented by Elite Models and Nomad Management and has over 2.5 million followers on her Instagram account.

Squid Game is Jung’s debut as an actor. Speaking to W Korea, she revealed that she landed the part in Squid Game’s cast only a month after joining a new acting agency. The agency’s CEO asked her to create a video for her audition – at the time, she was in New York for New York Fashion Week. Jung said that the experience was initially quite daunting for her, as she wasn’t sure why a director would choose her. “I remember how I spent all my time reading the script apart from when I ate food. I sent the video in, and the director contacted me, asking me to meet in person. So I dropped everything and flew in right away,” Jung said.

Despite not being cast as the main character, Jung’s stellar performance helped turn Sae-byeok into one of its most beloved characters. That’s all the more admirable given it’s her first acting job and, while she doesn’t have any further roles lined up at the time of writing (and Squid Game season 2 is yet to be confirmed), suggests she should have a bright future as an actress. For now, Netflix subscribers can still see Jung in Squid Game as it continues streaming on Netflix.

*Warning: Contains spoilers for Squid Game*

The brutal playground games featured in Squid Game have totally taken over the internet in recent weeks, with TikTok challenges racking up millions of hits, but its characters have also proven just as fascinating.

The dynamic between its lead stars has helped it become the number show on Netflix all around the world, with viewers rooting for their favourites.

While players are killed off in the blink of an eye in the ultra-violent series, there are some which have become real fan favourites across the nine episodes.

One in particular who has stood out to viewers is the enigmatic Player 067.

But who is she? Here’s everything you need to know.

Who is 067 in Squid Game and does she die?

Player 067 (also known as King Sae-bye, played by HoYeon Jung) is one of the characters fans have taken to their hearts in the massively popular series.

She doesn’t give a whole lot away over the course of the show, and as some viewers have pointed out online, you could easily have missed vital things about the character if you were watching with English dubbing.

As fans eventually discover, though, player 067 is a determined woman who escaped from North Korea with her young brother.

She is called a ‘pickpocket’ after taking player 465’s (Seong Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-Jae) winnings before entering the games, as well as clashing with player 101 (Jang Deok-su, played by Heo Sung-tae).

One of the most emotional moments in the series sees player 240 (Ji-yeong, played by Lee Yoo-Mi) form a connection with player 067

She ends up bonding with another woman on their team, Ji-yeong, aka player 240, during their game of marbles. It’s there that she admits that she planned to use the winnings to get her brother out of foster care and reunite him with their mother in North Korea.

In the end, she reaches the final three with player 465 and player 218 (Cho Sang-woo, played by Hae-soo Park). However, after crossing the bridge in the penultimate challenge, she is gravely injured with a shard of glass embedding itself in her stomach.

She asks player 456 to look after his brother, and while he is requesting medical assistance for her, player 218 sneaks up on her and stabs her.

Is she dead? While viewers see her carried out of the arena in a coffin before being cremated, there are some social media users out there who are claiming that she could still be alive.

Sadly, it seems more like wishful thinking than anything else. Still, we’ll have to wait to hear back on a potential second season before we know any more.

Squid Game is available to stream on Netflix.

One of the surprise big hits of the year for Netflix is the Korean drama, Squid Game. By now most of us have watched at least some of the series and are waiting for news on season two which will surely materialise at some point considering the enormous global attention the show has garnered.

And within a show with many talking points, the character who has intrigued people most appears to be contestant 067 - a somewhat tragic and complex hero in the story.

But who is 067, what happens to her, and who is the actress who plays her?

Here's all your Squid Game scoop on 067.

Who is 067 in Squid Game?

067's name is Kang Sae-byeok (she's played by the actress and model Jung Ho-Yeon) and she enters the game as a defector from North Korea. She has signed up for the game to try and win the big cash prize so that she can save her brother who is stuck in an orphanage and to give them the best chance of starting a new life.

Much more information on her backstory was not provided but we do know that she and her brother are the only surviving members of her immediate family and that she was involved with the gangster, Jang Deok-su. A quiet and at times lonely-looking character, she clearly has trust issues and was not keen on teamwork in the games - other players only knew her as 067 for a large part of them.

But the games do have an effect on who she is and she changes as they go on - eventually learning to trust other people and showing how strong her morals are in the process.

Who is Jung Ho-Yeon?

Although she plays one of the central characters in Squid Game, Jung Ho-Yeon is actually making her debut screen acting performance in the horror drama.

The 27-year-old is best known to most people before the Netflix show as a very success model, having graced the cover of many of the most high-profile magazines in both South Korea and across the world. Dubbed "Korea's Next Top Model" by Vogue, Jung Ho-Yeon has walked the runway for many of the biggest fashion brands including Dolce & Gabbana, Burberry and Chanel. She announced her intention to begin acting in 2020, filming Squid Game shortly afterwards ahead of its international release in September 2021 on the streaming service.

On the 4th October 2021, just weeks after the release of Squid Game on Netflix, she became the most followed Korean actress on Instagram with more than 13 million followers on the social media platform.

Does 067 die in Squid Game?

!SPOILERS AHEAD!

Netflix

Alas, Kang Sae-byeok, was not long for this world and she does not emerge from the games. But it was not all doom and gloom for 067 as due to her willingness to open up and trust someone, she is still able to get her brother the help that he needed, Fellow player, Seong Gi-hun, takes him out of the orphanage after the games and sends him off to a new home.
