The announcement was made on Monday during a press conference with the event being televised on the new RIZIN Fight Pass service with the exact date still to be determined.

“I was just being inducted into the Hall of Fame, which is truly amazing,” Mayweather said during the press conference. “My body of work as far as when I’m talking about my career, I’m truly, truly blessed way beyond belief.

“It’s still a great feeling now to be able to travel the world and basically do these exhibition bouts and have fun and my legacy is already engraved in stone but it’s still great to go around the world and entertain people from all walks of life. I’m pretty sure he’s going to come out and give his best like any and every guy but I’ve done seen every style. So my job is to just go out there, be me, have fun and do what I do best.”

Since retiring from boxing following a 10th round TKO win over ex-UFC champion Conor McGregor in 2017, Mayweather has stayed busy with several exhibition bouts including his first trip to Japan where he eviscerated Tenshin Nasukawa with three knockdowns in the first round, which led to his corner throwing in the towel to stop the fight.

Mayweather then engaged in a lucrative exhibition against YouTube celebrity turned boxer Logan Paul with their bout going the distance after eight rounds.

Most recently, the 45-year-old fighter dominated Don Moore in an exhibition held in Abu Dhabi and afterwards he teased another bout being booked before the end of 2022.

Now Mayweather has signed for the matchup against Asakura, who comes into the matchup with a 16-3 record with one no contest but no prior boxing experience.

That means Asakura will be largely outgunned against arguably one of the greatest boxers in history but it will certainly be a spectacle with Mayweather competing in Japan for the second time in the past four years.

Floyd Mayweather has confirmed he will return to the ring later this year after his exhibition clash with Don Moore.

The boxing legend took part in his third boxing showcase where he dropped and dominated his former sparring partner at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. Mayweather may have earned up to $100million for his latest outing having already earned $65m for facing Logan Paul last June.

Mayweather has now vowed to return to the Arabian Peninsula after his latest successful event, with a date pencilled in for October in Dubai. "I would like to thank everybody in the UAE, the media, and everybody who covered this fight," Mayweather said after the fight. "This is one of the best countries in the world.

"Don Moore is still undefeated, we are both still undefeated. I will bring another fight back to the UAE this year. It's a secret. I don't want to let the cat out the bag right now. But we have an opponent, and I choose the UAE. It's been a little rollercoaster ride for all of the fighters. I want to commend the fighters on just being patient.

"These types of things happen in life. We go through ups. We go through downs, but we stand strong, stand together, and we made it happen. I just want to say thank you to everyone that's here."

Mayweather certainly enjoyed his latest fight having danced with the ring girl and spoke to the commentary team while exchanging heavy blows with his rival. He also requested a rule change in the ring to three-minute rounds which could be employed in his next exhibition bout.

Khan revealed that Mayweather had asked him to come out of retirement having failed to share the ring throughout their professional careers. He has since admitted it could happen with boxing now having opened new doors to retired fighters.

"Look, exhibitions always happen," Khan explained to talkSPORT. "I met Floyd the other day in Dubai and there was some excitement there, he was like 'don't retire, let's do something, there's something we can do'. "I was like 'maybe if it didn't happen when we were both professional fighters, maybe it can happen as an exhibition'.

"No-one wins, it's just a bit of fun to give the fans a bit of entertainment. I think now with boxing, it's totally changed now where a lot of these fights happen, social media guys fight each other, and a new door's been open. People can just step in after a week of training and have a fight!"

Floyd Mayweather will take on little-known mixed martial artist Mikuru Asakura in his next exhibition bout which is scheduled to take place in Japan in September.

Mayweather retired from professional boxing following his 50th career win over Conor McGregor in 2017 but has since plundered a fortune from the exhibition scene. He knocked out Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa inside a round on New Year's Eve in 2018 before being taken the distance by YouTube star Logan Paul last summer.

Mayweather, 45, recently took on former sparring partner Don Moore in Abu Dhabi with the fight again going the distance without being scored. His clash with Asakura will take part under the RIZIN promotion with an exact date and venue to be announced later this month.

"I got to where I got to by working extremely hard," Mayweather said on Monday. "I’m always focused. I’m always pushing to be the best. It’s still a great feeling to travel the world, do these exhibition fights and entertain people from all walks of life. I’ve seen every style. My job is just to go out there, have fun and be my best. September we’re going to have fun and entertain people. I’m Floyd Mayweather to him. He’s just another opponent to me."

Asakura is a former two-division champion and has competed with RIZIN since 2018. He has campaigned at 145lb, a similar weight to Mayweather at the end of his career, but has. no boxing experience and an MMA record of 16-3. "I’m an MMA fighter but I’m going to use this opportunity and I’m going to use him to raise my name and my value internationally," he said. "I will win this fight."

Mayweather was inducted into the Hall of Fame last weekend following a career in which he won world titles in five weight divisions. He has been linked with exhibition bouts against former rivals Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan but has for now taken an easier route.

"I’m very happy to be sitting in between these two athletes for this event which will be Floyd Mayweather’s second with RIZIN," Nobuyuki Sakakibara, CEO of Rizin, said. "Floyd Mayweather was supposed to fight in an exhibition in Japan earlier in the year with an organization called Mega. However, due to the pandemic it has been postponed and RIZIN has taken over the contract for Floyd Mayweather’s next fight in Japan."

Floyd Mayweather will take on MMA fighter Mikuru Asakura in a bout that has been scheduled to take place in Japan this September.

The Japanese, who holds a 16-3 record, will face a boxing legend who was recently inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in the United States.

"My name is Mikuru Asakura and I'll be fighting Floyd Mayweather," said Asakura.

"I'm an MMA fighter but I'm going to use this opportunity and I'm going to use him to raise my name and value internationally. I'm going to win this fight."

"I'm pretty sure he's gonna come out and give his best, like any and every guy, but I've seen every style, so, my job is just to go out there, be me, have fun and do what I do best.
