Different types of planes are:

1. Reference plane: In general, two planes are employed for projection and are known as reference planes or principal planes of projection. These planes intersect at a right angle to each other.

2. Vertical plane (V.P.): The plane which is vertical is called a vertical plane and is denoted by V.P. Vertical plane is also known as frontal plane since the front view is projected on this plane.

3. Horizontal plane (H.P.): The plane which is horizontal but at a right angle to the VP. is called the horizontal plane.

4. Auxiliary plane (A.P.): Any other plane, placed at any angles to the principal planes, is called an auxiliary plane.

5. Profile plane (P.P.): The plane which is at right angles to the two principal planes is called auxiliary vertical plane (A.V.P.) or profile plane (P.P.).

Types of views are

1. The front view is the view of the object obtained on the V.P. by drawing projectors perpendicular to V.P. from the various corners of the object.

2. The top view is the view of the object obtained on the H.P. by drawing projectors perpendicular to H.P. from the various corners of the object.

3. The side view is the view of the object obtained on the P.P. by drawing projectors perpendicular to P.P. from the various corners of the object.

So when an object is cut by a section plane parallel to H.P and perpendicular to V.P, then the sectional view of the object is obtained in top view.
