  • Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett said Wednesday that Johnson will be the backup quarterback to Brett Rypien and will play the second half of Saturday's preseason contest against the Vikings, Aric DiLalla of the Broncos' official site reports.

Hackett said Rypien has earned the chance to be the starter against Minnesota, but he also wants to see consistency from both quarterbacks during the preseason finale. Johnson was impressive in Denver's first exhibition contest but was lackluster against the Bills on Saturday. The 36-year-old was the early favorite to earn the No. 2 spot behind Russell Wilson, but it appears like the preseason finale will be the final test for both quarterbacks to prove they deserve the backup gig.

  • Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett said Wednesday that there's a chance Griffith (elbow) is ready for Denver's regular season opener against Seattle, Mike Klis of 9News Denver reports.

Griffith dislocated his elbow during the team's preseason opener against the Cowboys and was expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks. However, based Hackett's comment, it appears like he may be able to return at the front end of that estimate. Denver signed Joe Schobert as a contingency plan after Griffith suffered the injury, but the veteran was released yesterday, which is another good sign Griffith will be back sooner than later. Griffith had been operating as a first-string inside linebacker during training camp, so his availability is pivotal for the Broncos defense.

  • Spencer (knee) reverted to Denver's injured reserve Tuesday, per the NFL's transaction log.

Spencer went unclaimed after being placed on waivers with a knee injury by the Broncos on Monday. The rookie defensive end is now set to sit out the entirety of the 2022 regular season, barring an injury settlement with the team.

  • Compton (back) was officially placed on the Broncos' reserve/PUP list Tuesday.

Compton began training camp on Denver's active/PUP list after undergoing a back procedure earlier this offseason, and he will now have to miss at least the first four games of the regular season. Therefore, the backup offensive lineman will become eligible to return starting with the team's Thursday night matchup against Indianapolis on Oct. 6.

  • Tucker (toe) was waived with an injury designation Tuesday, Aric DiLalla of the Broncos' official site reports.

Tucker dislocated his toe during Denver's preseason loss to Buffalo on Saturday. If Tucker goes unclaimed, he'll be reverted to IR and forced to miss the 2022 season. However, if he is able to reach an injury settlement with the team, he'll be free pursue new opportunities once he's healthy.
