For the first time in the Brian Kelly era, LSU will take the field at Tiger Stadium on Saturday for the annual National L Club Spring Game.
It’s the culmination of spring practice on the bayou and the last we’ll see of this team for several months until fall camp begins. That means it’s also the last chance for this coaching staff to make evaluations on position battles for a while, and there will be plenty to watch for on Saturday.
The quarterback competition is on everyone’s minds, and fans will be eager to see Arizona State transfer Jayden Daniels in a purple and gold uniform for the first time. Many see him as the likely starter, but not if Myles Brennan — who is finally healthy after two injury-plagued seasons — and redshirt freshman Garrett Nussmeier have anything to say about it.
The rest of the skill positions on offense will be intriguing, as well. The Tigers lost their top-two running backs from a year ago, and it will be interesting how the reps are split between John Emery Jr., Josh Williams, Armoni Goodwin and Penn State transfer Noah Cain.
On the flip side, this will be a largely new-look Tigers defense with additions like five-star true freshman linebacker Harold Perkins and a littany of transfers in the secondary like cornerbacks Jarrick Bernard-Converse and Greg Brooks Jr., as well as safety Joe Foucha.
There are, of course, returning players looking to make an impact on defense like edge rushers B.J. Ojulari and Ali Gaye, as well as linebackers Mike Jones Jr. and Micah Baskerville.
