When marking down a distance from a ruler, mark the whole inch, followed by a space, then the fraction of an inch. For example, 1 1/2, or 2 3/8. Plastics have also been used since they were invented; they can be molded with length markings instead of being scribed. The oldest preserved measuring rod is a copper-alloy bar that dates from c. 2650 BCE and was found by the German Assyriologist Eckhard Unger while excavating at the Sumerian city of Nippur (present day Iraq).
