“When I was little I believed in Jesus and Santa, spontaneous combustion, and the Loch Ness monster. Now I believe in science, statistics, and antibiotics.” So says seventeen-year-old Zac Meier during a long, grueling leukemia treatment in Perth, Australia. A loud blast of Lady Gaga alerts him to the presence of Mia, the angry, not-at-all-stoic cancer patient in the room next door. Once released, the two near-strangers can’t forget each other, even as they desperately try to resume normal lives. The story of their mysterious connection drives this unflinchingly tough, tender novel told in two voices.

A Conversation with A.J. Betts

The author of Zac & Mia talks about the inspiration behind this tender love story, the people who amaze her, and what she's doing with her spare time when she's not busy writing brilliant YA novels.

What inspired you to write Zac & Mia?

Zac & Mia is my third novel, but it’s my first to be inspired by real life. I never set out to write a book about two teenagers with cancer: who would set themselves such a daunting challenge?

I’ve been working with teenagers with illness for ten years. Since 2008, I’ve been specializing on the cancer ward. The students there are amazing and completely inspiring. They remind me of the things that matter, and the things that don’t. They are just like regular teenagers—funny, concerned with their appearance, worried about friendships and school—but their illness forces them to reassess the values they had, and the relationships that are important. I learn so much from them. Sometimes I’m left speechless. Sometimes I’m heartbroken.

Did any of your students, in particular, serve as inspiration for the characters Zac and Mia?

In early 2009, I was working with a wonderful student named Tayla. She was a keen reader, and had offered to read a draft of my second novel. Her one complaint was this: it didn’t have enough romance. Tayla made me to promise to focus more on love in my third novel. At the same time, I was teaching a male student who was in isolation due to having a Bone Marrow Transplant. It made me wonder how I would cope: imagine being stuck in a room for five weeks. With your mother! The concept of isolation intrigued me.

The story of Zac & Mia emerged through me asking questions: How can you fall in love with someone you can’t meet? What does beauty look like? What does courage look like? And what does it mean to be a good friend?

How long did it take you to write?

The novel took approximately two-and-a-half years to write. The reason it took so long was because I’d stopped writing in September 2010, when my student Tayla passed away unexpectedly. Even though I’d lost a number of students to cancer, Tayla’s death affected me greatly, and my story became too difficult to continue, especially as she’d been such a big supporter of the story. Emotionally, I gave up. It was Tayla’s mother who encouraged me to continue, and I finally did.

What surprised you most about people’s reactions to the book in your native Australia?

I’ve been completely bowled over by the reactions here in Australia. I guess I’m (pleasantly) surprised that it’s connected with such a broad range of people, males and females, from eleven to eighty-five, well and sick. I’m really glad that Zac has become a bit of a legend (he’s adorable, let’s be honest), but I’ve been quite surprised by some of the reactions to Mia. Teenage girls, especially, have been really tough on her. What is terrific is how the readers warm to Mia as they come to know her. She’s the character who undergoes the biggest transformation, and readers become quite protective of her. I feel so proud of Mia, as if it was her writing the end of the story, and not me.

What do you hope your US audience takes away most from this book?

I don’t want to be greedy and wish for too much, but if I can, I wish that US audiences will carry the story with them long after they read it, remembering how precious every day is, and how not to take anything or anyone for granted. Zac and Mia come to learn that life is worth fighting for. It truly is. I’ll never understand why beautiful (real life) teenagers have their lives cut short. Why are they unlucky enough to have cancer? Why not me? I’ll never stop feeling angry on their behalf. But what these teenagers do is remind us to live every day well, to treat people gently, And not to take this life or planet lightly.

When you’re not writing, how do you spend your time?

Fortunately/unfortunately, I’m quite an active person and I find it hard to sit still. I hate feeling trapped (a bit like Zac!) so I’m always looking for excuses to be outdoors. My main sport is cycling: I own five bikes and cycle most days. I love road cycling, touring, and mountain-biking. I also spend my time walking and running, or sometimes swimming at the beach. When I can sit still long enough, I usually read books or watch films. I love baking. Muffins are my specialty.

And of course, I work part-time. I still teach one or two days a week on the cancer ward. I also study (I’m doing my doctorate in creative writing because I’m a big nerd) and the rest of my time is devoted to visiting schools and festivals to talk about Zac & Mia.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Above average in this burgeoning subgenre; it’s the healing powers of friendship, love and family that make this funny-yet-philosophical tale of brutal teen illness stand out." —Kirkus   * "Zac & Mia holds its own as a smart, well-crafted story about the importance of friendship and feeling understood." —School Library Journal, starred review   "Betts portrays cancer as hard, scary, and isolating, but beatableor at least bearable—if one isn't facing it alone, and her depiction of a boy trying to hold onto a normal life and a girl realizing she can't keep hers from changing has power." —Publishers Weekly  "This Australian import, told from alternating perspectives, introduces two characters who are remarkable in their own right." —Horn Book Magazine  "There’s complexity in their sometimes thorny relationship that makes this compelling as more than just a romance, but their connection is ultimately satisfyingly heartfelt. Hand this to readers looking for a love story with shadows but not inevitable doom." —Bulletin   Winner of the 2012 Australian Text Prize  —

It was an interesting and touching read about two cancer survivors who nourished and gave meaning to each other's life.

After watching the series I had to get this book and it did non disappoint!

My daughter was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma at age 17. This book was hard to read, but very good and very accurate. Thank you for showing the world there is more than childhood cancer and adult cancer. The teenagers get overlooked...

I loved this book. The only reason why it missed out on getting 5/5 was because I found Mia’s character a bit annoying at times. I understand she was angry about getting cancer, and that’s probably a pretty normal and expected reaction when your world gets turned upside down. But she didn’t have to be such a bratty bitch at times! I did however finish the book in about 24 hours because I just didn’t want to put it down.

I didn't know much about this book and wasn't sure how I was going to feel about it but I am so glad I have it a chance. It was such a sweet story that I couldn't stop reading!

This was a gift for a friend's daughter. She wanted to red the book as it was an incomplete TV series and she wanted to know the ending. She is enjoying reading it

This book was an enjoyable quick read that I would recommend to anyone. Read it on my lunch breaks at work and it was a nice way to brighten up my day with the dynamics Zac and Mia bring to the table.

I really cannot say anything that hasn't already been said on previous reviews. This book, while about two young people living with cancer, is nothing like TFIOS. Full disclaimer: I LOVE TFIOS. I love this book slightly more. Yes, it shows the darker side of cancer, and yes the characters aren't always lovable, but they are very real. A.J Betts did a fantastic job and I highly recommend it.

3.0 out of 5 stars and the story develops nicely. It's a nice story

Reviewed in Australia on July 31, 2016

This is the story of a boy who's sick and a girl who is troubled. The characters are memorable, and the story develops nicely. It's a nice story. I must admit, though, Zac's narrative while he was in hospital did not resemble anything I've heard while working in a cancer hospital. It's a sweet story. But I had to make myself keep reading it ; it just didn't pull me in as much as I would have liked.

5.0 out of 5 stars a difficult subject, dealt with empathy

Reviewed in Australia on June 7, 2014

Nothing can help a suffering teen better than a fellow teen who has 'been there, done that'. This book has a clever twist to the story - that's not to say it isn't able to be guessed at as you read on, but it is still very well done.

Where can I watch Zac and Mia season 3?

Based on the novel by A.J. Betts about two teens battling cancer in the same hospital. Zac and Mia featuring Anne Winters and Kian Lawley has one or more episodes streaming with subscription on Netflix, streaming on Paramount+, available for purchase on Google Play, and 3 others.

Is Zac and Mia a true story?

Writing Zac & Mia was a much more personal process as it drew on real life. As a result, I was very conscious of making divisions between my real students and my fictional characters.

Did Zac and Mia get renewed?

Anne Winters plays Mia, and Kian Lawley plays Zac. The series was renewed for a second season following a "strong fan response".

Does ZACS cancer return to Zac and Mia?

At the end of the novel, Zac's cancer returns and he is admitted back into the hospital. Mia learns to accept her fate while supporting Zac as he receives another treatment.
