Best Practices For Using Cash App to Send Payments

Cash App wants to help you keep your money safe. To do so, follow these best practices for recognizing and avoiding scams, reporting phishing attempts, and following Cash App’s security best practices. Please note that Cash App to Cash App payments are instant and usually can’t be canceled.

Protect Sensitive Information

Fraudsters attempt to steal customer data using fake phone numbers and emails, pretending to be a Cash App representative.

No one representing Cash App will ever ask for your sign-in code over the phone, on social media, or through any other medium. We will never ask for you to send us a payment or provide sensitive information such as your full bank account information or Social Security Number. If you believe that you have fallen victim to a phishing scam, please change your Cash App PIN immediately and report the incident by contacting Cash App Support.

Recognizing and Avoiding Scams

Before sending a payment, we strongly recommend that you:

-Only send to people you know or to verified Cash App accounts

-Verify the recipient’s name before sending

-Double-check the spelling of $Cashtags

-Double-check the recipient’s phone number or email for typos

COMMON TYPES OF SCAMS:

Scammers often target vulnerable individuals who are in need of help, which often results in making promises they do not keep after they receive payment. Cash App strives to be a safe place for people to send and receive funds from people they know. Please keep these best practices in mind before you send a Cash App payment. If someone says something that sounds too good to be true, chances are that it’s a scam.

Cash-Flipping

Scammers will often claim to have the ability to “flip” your money, promising to increase your money if you first send them funds, often called a “clearance fee.” These scammers will accept your funds without sending anything in return. Cash App will never request funds to claim payments.

Puppy/Pet Deposit Scam

Scammers will claim to have an upcoming litter and request a deposit in order to secure one of the animals. These scammers usually post fake photos, won’t communicate over the phone, and will offer to sell purebred, or highly sought after, animals at an extremely low price. Since Cash App cannot guarantee a refund in the event that you do not receive what you pay for, it’s safer to send money over Cash App once you meet the buyer in person when receiving the goods.

Apartment and Home Rentals

Scammers often promise a good or service without ever providing proof that it actually exists. This includes promising to find you a cheap apartment, or offering an apartment at a much lower rate than normal, requiring a deposit with or without an application, or allowing a tour of the prospective rental.

Fraudulent Cash Support

Verified Cash Support can be reached in-app, or through cash.app/help. Please be wary of phone numbers online claiming to be direct lines to Cash Support. You may not be able to recover any funds lost if you allow a third party access to your account.

Cash Support will never ask you to provide your Sign-In Code, PIN, require you to send a payment, make a purchase, download any application for “remote access,” or complete a "test" transaction of any kind.

Reporting Phishing Attempts

What is Phishing?

Phishing is an attempt by a fraudulent actor to collect personal and/or financial information through social media, email, phone, or text message. Victims of phishing scams are sometimes directed to enter their information into fake websites posing as real ones.

Verified emails from Cash App will come from a cash.app, square.com, or squareup.com address.

If you receive a suspicious social media message, email, text or phone call regarding the Cash App, or see a phone number that you believe is illegitimate, please contact support through your app, or at cash.app/help to report the incident. Cash App will investigate and take action if needed.

Please note that there are currently no phone numbers that you can call to speak with Cash Support.

Security Best Practices with Cash App

Cash App Sign In

Every time you sign in to your Cash App account, you’re sent a one-time-use login code.

If you received an unsolicited sign in code via email, we recommend securing the email account associated with your Cash App account by updating your password and enabling two-factor authentication.

If you sign in to your Cash App on a device other than your personal device, make sure to sign out.

Cash App Transaction Verification

  • Enable the Security Locksetting so that every Cash App payment and Cash Out requires your passcode.
  • Enable notification via text message or email so that you are notified after every Cash transaction. You may adjust these settings in the profile section of your Cash App.

Secure your mobile device

  • Create a passcode for your mobile device. To do so, check your device’s general settings. Because all devices vary, you may need to check your device manual for more information.

Secure your email

  • If you have an email address associated with your Cash App account, we recommend securing that email account by enabling two-factor authentication (if your email provider supports it).

Communication with the Cash Team

  • Only reply to emails from people and organizations that you know and trust. Cash emails will come from ”@square.com,” @squareup.com,” or “@cash.app”.
  • Emails from the Cash Team or Square will only contain links to websites at square.com, squareup.com, cash.app/help or cash.me. If an email contains links to other websites, it was NOT sent by Square.
  • The Cash Team will never ask you for your login information.
