All things are possible with God not because we sing the song, not because we pray the right words, and not because we believe hard enough. All things are possible with God because it’s his very character.

God declares it of himself throughout scripture.  It’s his very name, an identity of who God is, and therefore what he does. In Genesis, God revealed himself as El Shaddai—God Almighty, who holds all power and all might.

“When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, ‘I am God Almighty; walk before me faithfully and be blameless.’” (Genesis 17:1)

Even now as you read this and I write it, heaven is declaring God’s omnipotence. “Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,’ who was, and is, and is to come.” (Revelation 4:8, NIV)

God is not simply powerful; he is all-powerful. His power is infinite and without limit. While we categorize our prayers as hard or easy for God, wringing our hands over whether God can come through, there is no hard or easy for God.

God has power to do everything he wills to do.

And part of his will is conveyed through his promises to us. If God promises it, we can count on it no matter unexpected loss, the economy, our boss, the diagnosis, the government, the enemy or any amount of time that’s lapsed. God’s promises are 100% backed by his power to carry them out. (Find 40 of those promises of God here.)

God not only declares himself God Almighty but tells us throughout scripture that all things are possible with him. Sometimes, scripture uses those exact words and other times God challenges with a rhetorical question. One thing is clear: when we once begin to understand God’s infinite power, it becomes crazy not to trust him.

Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.” (Mark 10:27, NIV)

Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26, NIV)

 “Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” (Mark 14:36, NIV)

For nothing will be impossible with God. (Luke 1:37, ESV)

Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.” (Luke 18:27, NIV)

This is what the LORD of Heaven’s Armies says: “All this may seem impossible to you now, a small remnant of God’s people. But is it impossible for me? says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies.” (Zechariah 8:6, NLT)

Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you. (Jeremiah 32:17, NIV)

All the people of the earth are nothing compared to him. He does as he pleases among the angels of heaven and among the people of the earth. No one can stop him or say to him, “What do you mean by doing these things?” (Daniel 4:35, NLT)

Yet It’s Not a Blank Check For Us

There is never a question of God’s power. We never have to wonder whether God is able to bring something about or able to deliver in a situation or able to do what we’re asking him to do. Absolutely, our God is able. He can do it— whatever IT is.

There is only a question of God’s will.

When Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane the night before his crucifixion, he acknowledged that God could take the cup from him because God could do anything.

But there was a banner that ruled higher than the ability of God.

The possibility of God is always hemmed by the will of God.

And so with one breath Jesus declared that all things are possible with God and with the next, he surrendered to God’s will.

This is the sweet spot for us as well: under God’s infinite power and within His impeccable will.

God’s will is perfect and it is best. He is for us and whatever he does is good.  If we never receive what we ask for, if the door never opens, if the thorn in our flesh is never removed, it is never because God is unable. It is because it is not best.

Oh, that we would rest in God’s infinite power for every need and every circumstance we face. The power that brought triumph over death—death!—and seated Jesus in heaven is the same power at work for us. (cf. Ephesians 18:19-21)

No need is too great for God to provide.
No sadness is too heavy for God to comfort.
No problem is too messy for God to untangle.
No circumstance is too ugly for God to redeem.
No problem is too difficult for God to give wisdom.
No temptation is too strong for God to deliver.
No relationship is too broken for God to reconcile.
No sin is too horrible for God to pardon.
No wound is too deep for God to heal.
No sin cycle is too strong for God to break.
No person is too far for God to save.

What are you praying for right now? Whose salvation are you praying for right now? What sin cycle are you in that you need freed from? What seems too big and too hard? Nothing is impossible with God.
