Frizzy hair is one of the most common complaints we hear from our clients, especially due to our high humidity summers and cold, damp winters! What most people don’t realize, however, is that preventing frizz actually starts in the shower. It is the lack of moisture in the hair that causes the hair to look for moisture in the environment around it.
When the goal is to reduce frizz, the key is moisture! In addition to a good hydrating shampoo and conditioner, you’re going to want to add in some specialty products to help combat dryness, here are a few we recommend: Hair Masks – When used weekly, a specialized hair mask can drastically help to calm the chaos! Weekly masks can stay in for 5-10 minutes and will give better results than your conditioner. For longer lasting results, consider a in-salon deep conditioning treatment that can last up to 10 shampoos
Leave in conditioners – provide extra moisture, protect from damage and breakage and are great for curly and coarse frizzy hair. For fine hair, make sure to look for something that won’t weigh down the hair. Leave-in products should be applied in the shower or immediately after getting out.
Hair oils – can be used on wet or dry hair to add shine. For fine hair, use a limited amount to avoid weighing the hair down, thicker, curly hair would typically require more. Hair oils can help with dryness and strengthen the hair over time.
Hair Serums – are great for frizz and flyaways, as they coat the hair. Serums are also great for humidity because they have a lot of silicones in them. As a result, however, they are not great for fine hair, so it is important to do your research to find out what works best for you.
Anti-Humidity Sprays – are a must here in Nova Scotia as we have a huge amount of humidity here! Anti-humidity sprays act as a shield. For best results, spray all over once all your products are on. Hot tip: make sure to also apply underneath your hair as once you start to sweat, it can cause more frizz!

Shower at a lower temperature to prevent overdrying. Avoid washing your hair every day or if that's not an option, try using a co-wash – cleansing conditioner. Heat tools can damage the hair, so if you're able to let your hair air dry, do that!
Why does my hair go Fluffy?Fluffy hair is usually the result of dryness, so it's really important to make sure you condition when you wash. You could even use a deep conditioning mask once per week if you need extra moisture.
Why does my hair get poofy after I shower?Humidity, lack of moisture, friction, and styling and chemical damage can unsettle the cuticles and cause hair to frizz. How you treat your hair before, during, and after the shower can help treat frizz, even in the most humid and unforgiving climates.
Why does my hair become frizzy after washing it?The main reason for frizzy hair after washing is a disrupted cuticle layer, which means, the cuticles are not laying flat as they should be. What is this? And when the cuticles are not tight and sealed, humid air penetrates them easily to swell the hair shafts.
