Who is going to be the new spider man

Spider-Man: No Way Home, the final film in the Tom Holland-led trilogy, hit theaters on December 17, 2021. The movie earned the second-highest domestic opening of all time, bringing in more than $260 million at the box office in its first weekend. Since then, it’s amassed more than $600 million in U.S. box office earnings. So of course, fans are already wondering if — and when — we can expect a fourth installment from the franchise. Specifically, will we see Tom and Zendaya back on the big screen together?

Understandably, not too much has been revealed about the next film. No Way Home was meant to wrap up Tom’s tenure as Peter Parker, but Spider-Man producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal have dropped a few hints that his story will continue. Here, we break down everything we know about the potential sequel trilogy.

*Major spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home below!*

Will there be a Spider-Man 4?

Seems so! According to a New York Times interview with longtime Spider-Man producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal, a fourth film is in the works.

“Amy and I and Disney and Sony are talking about — yes, we’re actively beginning to develop where the story heads next,” Feige said.

Pascal added, “At the end of the movie we just made, you see Spider-Man make a momentous decision, one that you’ve never seen him make before. It’s a sacrifice. And that gives us a lot to work with for the next film.”

But that wasn’t the first remark made about a sequel trilogy. On November 29, Pascal kickstarted the conversation in an interview with Fandango.

“This is not the last movie that we are going to make with Marvel,” she said. “We are getting ready to make the next Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland and Marvel. We're thinking of this as three films, and now we're going to go onto the next three. This is not the last of our MCU movies.”

No official confirmation from Sony or Marvel has been made, however.

So, is Tom Holland confirmed to star in Spider-Man 4?

The short answer is: we don’t really know yet. In a May 2022 interview with Deadline, Sony chairman Tom Rothman confirmed that there are a few Spider-Man projects in the works. "We have our Marvel business, which breaks into three tranches," Rothman said. "There are the Spider-Man movies, and we’re currently at work on two Spider-Verse sequels to our Oscar-winning animated movie, with Lord and Miller. We hope to get working on the next Spider-Man movie." Then, he was asked whether Spider-Man 4 would include Jon Watts, Tom Holland, and Zendaya, he responded "That whole group, we hope."

In a February 2022 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Tom Holland conveyed that his future as the webslinger remains undecided. "We’ve had conversations about the potential future of Spider-Man, but at the moment they are conversations," he said. "We don't know what the future looks like."

Holland then expressed that he is currently "not really thinking about the future," and instead, is content with celebrating the immense accomplishments of No Way Home: "I'm still riding the wave of the success of the film and enjoying that."

However, he assured fans that producers Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige, along with Sony Pictures executive Tom Rothman, are in talks to develop a sequel trilogy. "But at this moment I don't know what that is," he said.

In December, Tom spoke about the next Spidey and indicated that he would like to see a new lead step into the role — namely, a more diverse one.

“I would love to see a future of Spider-Man that’s more diverse — maybe you have a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman," he said in an interview with People. “We’ve had three Spider-Mans in a row; we’ve all been the same. It’d be nice to see something different.”

As indicated, Pascal hopes differently. Speaking with Variety during the No Way Home premiere in December, she enthusiastically expressed wanting to work with Tom again: “As long as he wants to make Spider-Man movies, we will make Spider-Man movies,” she said. “But I’m a producer and I always think everything’s going to work out.” When the interviewer asked explicitly if we’ll see Tom as Spider-Man again, Pascal responded: “If I have my way we will.”

Previously, Tom has been hesitant to confirm or deny any continued involvement in the Spider-Man franchise.

“In all honesty, I don't know the answer. There have been conversations about the future of Spider-Man. Whether it will be with me, I'm not too sure yet,” he told The Hollywood Reporter in December. “Maybe I'll be a producer or something, I don't know. But I do know that I love this character and I would be sad to say goodbye, but I have achieved basically everything I wanted to achieve as this character.”

Will Zendaya return to the franchise?

If you’ve seen No Way Home, then you know that the film ends with everyone forgetting who Peter Parker is — including Zendaya’s character, MJ. Peter decides not to reveal his real identity to her, and she and Ned head off to MIT.

The storyline is left fairly open-ended, leaving fans to speculate if we’ll see MJ (or Ned) in future installments.

Zendaya hasn’t made any public comments about returning to the MCU, but she did acknowledge rumors that she would play Spider-Woman.

“If there's anything that I’ve learned it’s that, you know, superheroing isn’t always that easy. So I’m good,” she said during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

According to Screen Rant, Spider-Woman makes an appearance in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse — an animated film set for release in October 2022. But Issa Rae voices the character, and in any case, MJ does not become Spider-Woman in the comic book series.
