Kansas City, Mo., is the historic core city of the metro area, which spans across the Kansas-Missouri state line. Founded in the 1830s, the city was originally simply called “Kansas.” Then, when the Kansas Territory was established 20 years later, confusion led to the current name of Kansas City to distinguish them from one another. The city’s growth began in earnest after the Civil War, when it was chosen as the best location for a bridge over the Missouri River. The Hannibal Bridge was completed in 1869 and, afterward, the population exploded.
There are more than 145 federal agencies located in the Kansas City metro area, including one of only two locations of the Internal Revenue Service that can process paper tax returns. Other major employers include Honeywell, Ford Motor Company, General Fairfax Assembly Plant and Sanofi-Aventis — one of the largest drug manufacturing plants in the United States. This unique combination of industries has affected the breakdown of Kansas City commercial real estate. Many institutes of higher learning are located in Kansas City, including the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Rockhurst University, Kansas City Art Institute, Baker University and Saint Paul School of Theology. Kansas City is located at the convergence of several of the most traveled highways in the country — including interstates 70 and 435 — and public transportation options are overseen by the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA).
