Flocks of tourists choose Times Square as a base due to its convenient location for exploring the city. But the “Crossroads of the World”, “Centre of the Universe”, and “Great White Way” is also Manhattan’s most exciting district. Times Square is legendary for its blazing neon lights, electronic billboards, and a cavalcade of Broadway theatres, offering a larger-than-life backdrop as the world’s entertainment epicentre. From cool to classic, in the thick of it or off the beaten path, here's our pick of the best hotels near Times Square.

One wouldn’t imagine that any street within an earshot of Times Square could be as quiet as this one, but this block of West 44th Street remains something of an oasis. Broadway theatres and top-notch restaurants and bars are a quick jaunt from the hotel, however, so you get the best of both worlds. Inside, service is exceptional, rooms are spacious by New York standards, there’s a modest but well-equipped gym, and 24-hour room service. Pass through the lobby and enter a tiny cocktail bar that has a trendier vibe than the hotel itself. If you’d like to explore Times Square with a local, the hotel hosts free walking tours.

Thoughtful design details, style and luxury abound at this brick, steel, and glass 22-storey hotel in the Garment District, a stone's throw from Times Square. While the rooms are noticeably small, the hotel more than makes up for it with a trendy rooftop cocktail lounge offering gorgeous Manhattan views, and pleasant staff who will gladly direct and assist as needed. Guests also get complimentary overnight shoe shine services. Throughout the interiors, features such as exposed brick and butcher-block flooring are evocative of the industrial past of the neighbourhood and much of the furniture is custom-designed and the art hand-picked. Take note of the fabulous collections as you wander through.

This Beaux-Arts landmark, originally built in 1906 by John Jacob Astor, adds a pinch of sophistication to Times Square. Yet, with its sleek, low-slung furnishings and neutral palette, the interiors are the antithesis of Beaux Arts, and Bellhops in baggy knickerbockers and chunky Doc Martens set the tone the moment you arrive. Rooms are blanketed in taupe, silver, black but the thing that is most striking about them is the soundlessness: you can see the frenzy of light and traffic on Times Square below but you don’t hear a thing. Diagonally opposite is the building from which the Crystal Ball is famously dropped each New Year’s Eve.

Sandwiched between Times Square and Grand Central Station, the hotel sits in a superb location off Fifth Avenue, on a calm block surrounded by upscale hotels and private clubs. From the moment you enter, you’re bounced back into the Art Deco period, with lofty tray ceilings, wainscoting, marble, and brass accents setting the stage for leather club chairs, plush carpeting, grand torchieres, and modern art in the lobby. Guest quarters are understated and comfortable. Unpretentious staff, an elegant French brasserie and a coveted Midtown address near couture shops and Broadway theatres make this outpost worth the trip.

Slipped between two pre-war buildings and close to Times Square, this chic hotel with a natty downtown vibe has the best of both worlds when it comes to location. Not only is it removed from the rowdiness and crowds of the busiest part of the Theatre District, but it’s a quick walk to beautiful Bryant Park. Tons of shops, bars, and eateries are nearby, and Grace Plaza, an oasis with a bevy of spots to sit, read, and socialise, is just across the street. Contemporary décor, down-to-earth staff, and a restaurant and bar helmed by an award-winning chef place LUMA as a frontrunner among Times Square hotels.

At 50th and Broadway this address is far from quiet, but citizenM is an affordable brand for travellers seeking the basics with a few extra perks. Expect uber-comfy king-sized beds in tiny rooms, luxurious rain-showers and moodpad controls. While there's no full-service restaurant, there is a fantastic breakfast buffet, a 24-hour grab-and-go, rear courtyard with seating, and a chic rooftop bar providing cocktails and panoramic views. Amenities aside, the attraction (besides reasonable rates) is the lobby-meets-living-space, teeming with energy like the city beyond its doors. Parking isn't available on-site, but the hotel provides a discount to nearby lots.

New York City’s busiest neighbourhood is also its brightest, and this 57-storey tower is right in the centre of it all on Broadway and 47th Street. Interiors pay artistic homage to the area’s various eras of history, from an eye-popping 39-foot-long neon masterpiece designed by New York studio Lite Brite Neon, to a corridor-long mural by a Brooklyn-based street artist depicting crowds that have roamed this neighbourhood over the decades (showgirls, punks). Service is particularly attentive and efficient for such a large hotel, and rooms are large for New York City.
