  1. Former Employee, more than 1 year

    Pros

HHSC is a good place to work, I enjoyed the team that I worked with. Also great benefits when working with the state.

    Cons

Nothing major. It is a really large organization, so sometimes it can be a challenge to find the right job that you want to apply for.

  2. Current Employee, more than 1 year

    Livable wage

    Business Outlook

    Pros

If you enjoy case management this is for you. Free healthcare for you, (not for family), option to retire around 20+ years.

    Cons

Enough to live but some fast food places still pay better than working for the state.

  4. Current Employee, more than 3 years

    Pros

    Great benefits and medical included

    Cons

Salaries are not competitive. Career trajectory is limited and requires leaving the agency to obtain anything higher than a minimum raise, even when changing job roles.

    Pros

If you want plenty of last minute mandatory over time requested 3 minutes before clock out with unknown time of when you can log off along with mandatory saturdays with a "good luck, figure out who can take care of your kids" and since you are salary then you don't get overtime paid at time and half, instead its paid at time.... well this is the place for you!!!!

    Cons

Not even worth your time. They say they will help you while you are out working but the truth is that they request you to have high numbers for completion of applications even if clients dont want to do their job and answer the phone. But it isnt the customers fault, its yours for not finding a way to get the case done full of 10 people in under 35 minutes. Worked myself like crazy with no yearly wage increase. A one time merit raise of 10 cents and a once time in 3 years bonus of OMG... $800. They pull 9.5% out of your check whether you like it or not so it goes to your pension before taxes. The health insurance sucks. Doesnt matter if you work in a little unknown town or large metro like dallas, houston, san antonio, etc... they pay you the same. I didnt even bother to type properly with spelling or punctuation for this review as they arent even worth it.

  6. Current Employee, more than 10 years

    Pros

Serving people of Texas is rewarding. My staff is dedicated and awesome.

    Cons

Declining benefits. Low pay. Constant changes in executive leadership past 7 years. Overly complex processes that limit carrying out mission & services. Turnover. Not competitive in benefits and telework to attract talent. Computers & technology outdated.

    Pros

    Time off Benefits Retirement available

    Cons

Low pay Not much opportunity for advancement unless you know someone. Poor management. Training isn’t case specific.

  8. Former Employee, more than 3 years

    Pros

    Health insurance benefits and holidays

    Cons

High turnover in the Office of Inspector General. Increase in workload and supervisors micromanage. There is an extreme lack of care from the superiors and an unexisting team building program.

    Pros

    Good work environment. Remote work.

    Cons

Not enough training. Thrown into the wolves.

  10. Former Employee, more than 3 years

    Pros

You work with a great team of people. You get free health insurance You have the ability to work from home You assist families in need

    Cons

Mandatory overtime has been nonstop since Covid (2+ years plus weekend work) and with additional people seeking refuge in Texas There not enough people to keep up with the demand of applications that need to be processed which leads to very frustrated clients who been waiting on an interview for 3 months or more The pay does not amount to the work It’s hard to move up and be promoted unless you have a Sup who cares to help you learn the skills needed
