Gain theoretical and practical knowledge in the following areas:

  • Key principles of applied linguistics for teachers
  • Second and foreign language acquisition
  • Second and foreign language teaching methods
  • English proficiency assessment
  • Second and foreign language writing
  • Language, discourse, and identity
  • Multilingual literacy and multimodality

Core Design Principles:

Integration of Theory and Practice

The courses and the learning tasks within each course are logically sequenced and scaffolded to facilitate the acquisition of the types of professional competence that TESL educators are expected to have. Course assignments are carefully designed to engage students in authentic learning and assessment tasks that will lead to the acquisition of four types of competence:

  1. Theoretical Competence

For most of the MEd TESL courses, one of the assignments is a theoretical one, such an inquiry or research paper, which facilitates the understanding of concepts, theories, professional jargon, terms, taxonomies, frameworks, historical overview, and current trends in the discipline.

  1. Analytical Competence

For most of the MEd TESL courses, an assignment focuses on analysis, interpretation, and/or critique.

  1. Practical Competence

Most courses include a practical assignment for which students are expected to design and create professional products, discourses, genres, instruments, or artifacts, such as: lesson and/or unit plans, teaching materials, assessment instruments, or portfolios.

  1. Collaborative Competence

An assignment consists of contributions to the online Discussion Board. Students are expected to post a number of individual reflections on course readings and engage in asynchronous dialogue with their peers.

The nature of the program is highly collaborative. Students are encouraged to:

  • Share their knowledge, ideas, and resources, and establish career-long professional relationships with their peers.
  • Post their assignments on the Discussion Board.
  • Give and receive peer feedback.
  • Give other students permission to use their products in their future practice. This way, the professional artifacts created by a cohort become a professional database or repository.

Relevant Content

All the courses in the program are relevant to the intended student population in the area of TESL. Instructors are highly knowledgeable in their areas of expertise. The required readings, learning tasks, and assignments are current, relevant, intellectually engaging, and with clear pedagogical implications.

Multimodality and Creativity

The course shells contain a variety of multimodal learning resources, such as links to online videos and websites, documents with enabling learning tasks, step-by-step instructions, mini-lectures given by program instructors, expert advice, and so on.

Learner-Centred Format

The course assignments give students the freedom to focus on the area of TESL in which they are interested, such as adult EFL education, K-12 EFL education, adult ESL education, or K-12 ESL education. Assessment criteria are clearly specified from the beginning of the course.

User-Friendly Format

Course syllabi and shells are organized in a clear, consistent, and systematic manner. The course shells are user-friendly and easy to navigate, with step-by-step instructions and suggestions.

Proposed Schedule

The 30-credit program is offered part-time over a period of two years and two terms, with scheduling designed to accommodate the needs of practicing teachers and educators. All courses are online and asynchronous, and electives can be taken any time during the program.
