A common problem you may have with any type of clear plastic, such as safety glass lenses and acrylic furniture items, is scratch marks. Even if you're careful when handling these items, they're still subject to everyday wear and tear. While scratch marks in clear plastic can be inconvenient, there is a way to remove both light and slightly deeper markings up to .5 mm in depth. Sandpaper helps you buff out the scratches and restore the plastic to better condition.

  1. 1.

Moisten a piece of 800-grit sandpaper with a bit of water. Rub the paper over the scratches using medium pressure and a circular motion until they begin to disappear. Continually re-moisten the sandpaper as you work so that it doesn't dry out.

  2. 2.

Use the same technique with 1200-grit sandpaper if the scratches still remain. Continue to dampen the paper and rub it over the scratches until they are gone.

  3. 3.

Clean the plastic with a damp cloth to remove any sandpaper residue. Follow up with a dry cloth.

  4. 4.

Place a small amount of metal polish on a dry cloth and gently rub it over the plastic in a circular motion to restore shine to the area, as the sandpaper can make it dull. Continue adding more polish to the cloth and applying it to the plastic until you're satisfied with the finish.

    Things You Will Need

    • Sandpaper, 600-, 800- and 1200-grit

    • Clean, dry cloths

    • Metal polish

    Tip

If the scratch is a little deeper, begin the buffing process with 600-grit sandpaper, working your way up to 1200-grit paper.
