i always set different notification sounds for different apps.
for example, for text messages, i use Messages (google), and i set a different notification sound for texts for this app so i would know when i received a text message.
however, i can't find where to set specific notification sounds for specific messages!
any help would be most appreciated.
thank you.

Are you trying to set custom tone for the messages app (all messages) or custom tone for specific conversations (wife)?

Go to ... Settings -- Apps -- Your apps ... on the right side click on those three dashes and it will open (Show system apps) then OK ... after that select the desired app, go to the notification and choose the sound you want...

Not all apps allow you to change notifications but for messaging app long press the icon then tap info >notifications tap>notifications catagories tap incoming message tap then change sound

To change the sound for an individual go into the message of the person you want to change. Hit the 3 dots and select details. Tap Notifications then tap sounds.

@mustang7757: yet another gold star (so many already!) for you! omg! you're an encyclopedia!
thank you thank you thank you!
my mistake was that i kept using the gear to go to Apps or Notifications and kept on searching.
the KEY to this is to long press on the Messages app itself and then press on the "i" button when the pop up comes up (after the long press). why in the world would they ONLY have access to this via this method, i wonder?
it's logical for people to go to apps/notifications or something similar via the gear!
again, @mustang7757 et al, thank you all so much for pitching in quickly.
very grateful.

I have the same issue, but this is not the screen I get when I long press and hit the "i". Mine goes to the App Info screen and I only have the option under Notifications to allow or deliver quietly.

I just spent HOURS with the same issue and I finally figured it out. Try this-
-From the screen where you're seeing the "Allow or deliver quietly", select "Notification Categories" (should be the last option.)
-Under "other", you'll see three categories. Select "New Messages". Don't toggle it; actually tap on the words.
-There you'll finally see the notification sound options, and you can customize your incoming text sounds.Good luck!

Heather, you're a dead set legend. Trying to set up my S22 like my old S10e and this was driving me nuts!
Thank you

One thing to note, in Gmail it's slightly different (at least it is on my Oz market handset).
Go through the same steps but when you get to the Notification Categories screen, under each Gmail account you may have, long hold on "Mail".
Hope that helps someone. 😉
