How many catalytic converters does a car have?
How many catalytic converters are on my car? I think mine might be having problems but I know that they can be really expensive to replace, so I’m just wondering how many I’ll have to buy if I do have to replace them.
Most cars will have one catalytic converter. If you have a car with a dual exhaust system, however, your car will have two catalytic converters. If your catalytic converter needs to be replaced, you may notice one or more of these warning signs:
- Your check engine light is on.
- There is a rattling noise coming from your engine.
- Your car doesn’t accelerate as quickly.
- The exhaust from your car starts to smell like rotten eggs.
- Your car jerks or loses fuel when you accelerate.
- You get fewer miles per gallon.
Repairing or replacing a catalytic converter can cost you anywhere from $945 to $2,475, including parts and labor. For this reason, most people consider catalytic converter repair and replacement to be a last resort, especially if your car is older or has a lot of miles on it. If you have a newer car, though, it’s possible that you still have an emissions warranty, in which case the replacement cost will usually be covered.
