The Samsung Screen Recorder app makes it easy to capture what's happening on your Galaxy screen. This guide shows you how to set it up and use it.

Not too long ago, Android users relied on downloading third-party apps to perform simple tasks such as recording their screen when gaming or video chatting. But ever since Android 11 rolled out in 2020, Android phones started to come with the feature pre-installed.

If you own a Samsung phone or tablet, this guide will show you how to access and use the built-in screen recorder tool on your Galaxy device and the different features available on it. Let's get started.

How to Access the Samsung Screen Recorder

  1. Swipe down from the top of your screen to access the notification panel. Swipe down again to open the Quick Settings panel and find the Screen recorder button.
  2. If the screen recorder icon is not visible, you can add it manually from the available buttons. To do so, click on the + icon. You'll now see a grid of extra buttons. Locate the Screen recorder button, drag and drop it onto the Quick Settings panel, then tap Done.

If you're someone who regularly makes use of the screen recorder, it's a good idea to keep it somewhere in the first six tiles of the Quick Settings panel, so you can quickly access it from the notification tray.

How to Start a Screen Recording on Samsung Galaxy Devices

  1. From the Quick Settings panel, tap the Screen recorder button.
  2. Select your preferred Sound settings when prompted.
  3. If you're creating a tutorial, it might be helpful to toggle on Show taps and touches.
  4. Tap Start recording and wait for the countdown to end, or tap Skip countdown to get started straight away.

Unlike other screen record solutions on Android, Samsung's One UI skin offers a variety of useful features you can use when recording your screen. In many ways, it's a compelling option for working professionals as well as gamers.

  • Minimize toolbar: Hide the screen record toolbar to view the contents on your screen more properly. Note that the toolbar is not visible on saved screen recordings.
  • Write or draw: Write or draw on the screen while recording it. You can choose from up to eight colors, resize the thickness of the brush, and undo/redo your brush strokes.
  • Selfie video overlay: Start and stop a selfie video overlay anytime on top of your screen recording. This is helpful for gamers who want to record their reactions when gaming; if that's your goal, you might want to have the sound settings set to Media sounds and mic. You can change the selfie video size in Screen recorder settings to cover more of the screen estate.
  • Pause/Play: Pause your screen recording and play it back anytime. This is helpful for when you want to, say, open an image but don't want the viewer to be able to see your other images when scrolling through the gallery.
  • Stop: Stop and save your screen recording to your gallery to view and share later.

Once you're done recording your screen, you will get a notification about the same. Tap on it to start viewing your last saved screen recording immediately. To see all your saved screen recordings, you can use a file manager app like Samsung My Files or the excellent Files by Google. Simply navigate to Internal storage > DCIM > Screen recordings.

How to Customize Your Samsung Screen Recorder Settings

You can customize your screen recordings in a variety of ways depending on your unique requirements. Let's see what they are and how to change each setting.

  1. Open your device settings and go to Advanced features > Screenshots and screen recorder.
  2. Under Screen recorder, you can customize the sound, video quality, and selfie video size of your screen recordings.
  3. Under Sound, you can select:
    1. No sound for a quiet recording.
    2. Media sounds to include the sounds you're hearing in the app you're recording.
    3. Media sounds and mic to add your voice on top of the recording.
  4. Under Video quality, you can choose from 1080p, 720p, or 480p. The higher the resolution, the clearer the recording will be at the cost of consuming more storage, and vice-versa.
  5. Under Selfie video size, you can change the size of your selfie video from small to large.
  6. You can also toggle on Show taps and touches for added viewing ease. The person watching the recording will be able to see where on the screen you were tapping and swiping.
