How do i check my ssi back pay

After your long Social Security application process, you are thrilled to get approved. After that, you are likely going to want your Social Security Back Pay, but when will you get it?

Monthly payments are sent by check or by Social Security Direct Deposit into your checking or savings account. If you have a checking or savings account, the SSA prefers making SSI Back Pay Direct Deposit payments and may insist upon doing so.

SSI monthly payments are scheduled to be received on the first day of each month. If the first falls on a weekend or a holiday, your SSI back pay will be released via direct deposit on the last business day before the first. For example, if the first falls on a Sunday, you will receive your SSI back pay check or your SSI direct deposit on the previous Friday.

SSDI payments are also sent by check or by SSDI direct deposit. However, the day you receive your payments depends on your birthday. If your day of birth is between the 1st and 10th of the month, you will receive your payment on the second Wednesday of each month. If your day of birth is between the 11th and 20th of the month, you will receive your payment on the third Wednesday of each month. Finally, if your day of birth is between the 21st and 31st, you will receive your payment on the fourth Wednesday of every month. Payments are always made a month late.

Your award letter will tell you exactly how much you will receive and when you will receive it.

For anyone who is still waiting to receive the green light to receive Social Security Income (SSI) benefits in the United States, it can be tough to know when this might happen and when your back pay may arrive.

This process is relatively straightforward, as your benefits payments will begin to arrive from the Social Security Administration (SSA) once you have been given initial approval for your claim or when you win your appeal.

What is SSI back pay?

You are able to receive the benefits you were eligible to get in the weeks, months or maybe even years that the Social Security Administration was processing your application.

Typically, back pay occurs when an applicant has had to file an appeal after having their application denied.

In some cases, you could be set for a significant payment if you have been made to wait for an extended period of time.

Your back pay will cover the months between your application date and the date you received approval.

How long does it take to receive SSI back pay?

This payment is sent out in three instalments, unlike with SSDI which is a lump sum payment, does not happen immediately after you get the green light, but the processing time is relatively quick.

Inside a few months of getting your first SSI monthly benefit, you should receive one-third of your back pay.

The second payment will follow six months later, and the final payment occurs after another six months after that.

It is not possible to get retroactive benefits for SSI, though. It is possible that you might have applied for SSI in July but had your claim turned down, yet after successfully appealing you get approval in February.

In this case, the back pay would cover the months between August and February.

If you have been approved for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, you may be owed some back pay from the Social Security Administration (SSA). For a claimant who has been approved for SSI benefits, they will be eligible for payment from the date of their application or the date they are found disabled, whichever is later. If the amount of back pay owed is more than $2000 the SSA will pay you in six-month installments until you have been paid in full.

SSI is a needs based benefit program. SSI recipients must be found medically disabled and must meet certain financial need requirements to be eligible for benefits.  In order for recipients to continue to meet the financial need requirements the SSA pays out the back pay in the $2000 installments. During the time period the back pay is being disbursed the recipient will also receive their ongoing monthly payments if applicable.

The SSA may be able to pay the installments sooner if the recipient can show need for an advanced payment. The SSA is very strict as to what may or may not qualify as a reason for receiving an early installment.  The SSA website indicates they may release funds early to a recipient who needs food, clothing, shelter, medicine or medically necessary services, supplies or equipment. The SSA may also provide an advance payment for the purchase of a home. In order to request an advanced installment you must contact the SSA directly.

The SSA will release all of the SSI back pay in one payment to a recipient who is terminally ill or is expected to pass away in a year or less.
