Here's how to reset your Apple ID password and regain access to your account.
The fastest and easiest way to reset your password is with your iPhone or other trusted Apple device—one that you're already signed in to with your Apple ID, so that we know that it's yours.
You need a passcode (or password on Mac) set up on your device.
Reset your Apple ID password on your iPhone or other trusted Apple device
- Go to Settings.
- Tap your name > Password & Security > Change Password.
- Follow the onscreen instructions to reset your password.
You can also follow this process on a trusted iPad, iPod touch, or Apple Watch.
To reset your password on your trusted Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings (or System Preferences) > Sign in with your Apple ID (or Apple ID). Then click Password & Security, Change Password, and follow the onscreen instructions.
If you have a new Apple device
If you have a new Apple device or an Apple device that you aren't signed in to with your Apple ID, you can select "Forgot Apple ID or password?" wherever the option appears.
During device setup, you can find this option on the Apple ID sign-in screen. After setup, you can select an app or other option that prompts you to sign in:
- iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: Go to the Settings app and tap Messages.
- Mac: Choose Apple menu > System Settings (or System Preferences). Then click Sign in with your Apple ID (or Apple ID) and enter your Apple ID.
Reset your Apple ID password with the Apple Support app on a borrowed device
If you don't have an Apple device but have access to your trusted phone number, you can borrow an Apple device from a friend or family member, or use one at an Apple Store.
- Open the Apple Support app on the borrowed Apple device. If needed, you can download the Apple Support app from the App Store.
- Tap Passwords & Security > Reset Apple ID password > Get Started.
- Tap "A different Apple ID."
- Enter your Apple ID and follow the onscreen instructions to reset your password.
Any information that you enter will not be stored on the device.
Reset your Apple ID password on the web
If you don't have a trusted device, you can reset your password on the web—but the process might take a little longer.
When possible, the web process redirects you to a trusted device. If you'll have access to one of your trusted devices soon, it might be faster and easier to reset your password then.

Reset your password
If the password you typed is incorrect, you’ll see a message that says:
Your account or password is incorrect. If you don't remember your password, reset it now.
We recommend following the steps below to resolve your password issues. If you already tried this but it didn't work, move ahead to Step 2: If you can't reset your password.
If the Enter password window is still open select Forgot password? (Or
go directly to Reset password and enter the username name again for the account you’re trying to reset and select Next).1. Select Forgot password?
For your protection, Microsoft must verify your identity before you can proceed with resetting your password. How to verify your identity depends if you previously added
security info to your account and if you can still access them. Select from the two options below.2. Verify your identity
Option 1: You received and can select a verification option
Select which option to send the verification code to.
Select Next.
Option 2: No verification options are given or you can no longer access any of the options
If you don’t see an option for where to send a code or you no longer have access to any of the verification options shown, you won't be able to reset your password this way.
Try the solutions listed in Step 2: If you can't reset your password. If those don't work either, or if you selected I can't receive a code from this verification page, you'll begin the account recovery process.
Go directly to Step 3: Help with the Microsoft account recovery form for tips to complete that process.
Depending on the contact method you chose, retype the first part of the email address or the last four
digits of the phone number hinted at in the previous window. Select Get code. Microsoft will send a verification code to the email or phone number you selected. Go to the recovery phone or email for where you expect to receive the code. Tip: If you didn't receive a message, check your junk folder or if you selected the phone option, make sure your phone has service and can receive texts, and verify your phone isn't set up to block texts from
unknown numbers.3. Get a verification code
Paste or type the code you received and select Next. Type your new password and select Next.4. Enter code and reset password
You successfully reset your password
If you successfully reset your password, now is a good time to set a reminder to verify your security contact info, or make changes to it. See Security best practices for more info.
