Gregory Porter Lyrics

"On My Way To Harlem"

I found out on my way to Harlem
Ellington you don't live 'round here
He moved away one day so they say
From Harlem
I can hear his echoes still
Now now now you can't keep me away from where I was born
I was baptized by my daddy's horn
Now now now you can't keep my away from where I was born
I was baptized by the jazz man's horn
I found out on my way to Harlem
Langston Hughes he don't live 'round here
He moved away one day from his way here in Harlem
I know that Marvin Gaye use to play right in here
Some body say you can't keep me away from where I was born
I was baptized by my daddy's horn
No you cant keep me away from where I was born
I was baptized to the sound of horns.

I found out on my way to Harlem
Ellington you don't live 'round here
He moved away one day so they say
Away from Harlem
I can hear his echoes clear
OH now you can't keep me away from where i was born
I was baptized by my daddy's horn
Now now now now you can't keep me away from where I was born
I was baptized by the sound of horns
Oh I found out on my way to Harlem
Marvin Gaye used to play whats going on right over there
I so could use some of those blues from Langston Hughes
Hey there goes the A train
Hey there goes the A train
Through Harlem
Hey there goes the A train
Hey there goes the A train
Hey there goes the A train

Kind of song you can't get out of your head once you hear it. I love how it talks about all those great people (Duke Ellington, Langston Hughes) who used to live in Harlem.

I get a "New York State of Mine" listening to this piece. He does a great job relaying the story. The relax styling of the music allow you to just kick back a take a ride through Harlem. I'm happy I purchased this and look forward to many hours of listening pleasure.

I was entranced from the moment I first heard this song on a jazz radio station. I lived in NYC in the 1980s and 1990s and often rode the A train Sometimes into Harlem. This song so captured the magic of the city and the clickety clack of the subway train going from one distinct neighborhood to the other. The references to some of the geniuses who sprang from Harlem is a reminder of the creativity of that area. Yet there is a certain kind of melancholy that these artists have long moved away and died. And in a lot of ways the distinct neighborhoods of NYC have too. Not the same at all when I go back to visit. So I feel the melancholy and longing for the past that this song evokes.
