Kennedy of Mahatma Gandhi. Hun woorden zijn immers van een onbetwiste wijsheid. Maar hebben ze ook echt gezegd wat we ze in de mond leggen? Quotes delen op FacebookWijze spreuken delen is een dingetje op Facebook: de digitale tegeltjes zie je om de haverklap voorbij komen. Persoonlijk word ik er een beetje horendol van. Maar ik snap wel dat mensen het doen: het staat best interessant om quotes te delen van mensen die alom als wijs worden beschouwd. We dwepen nu eenmaal graag met mensen die in hoog aanzien staan. Maar weten we eigenlijk wel precies wat we rondsturen? De bekendste uitspraak van GhandiEen veelgebruikte spreukengenerator is Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948), de Indiase politiek activist die geweldloosheid predikte. Zijn bekendste uitspraken kunnen hier met één klik worden gedeeld. Een van de populairste is: ‘Wees de verandering die je in de wereld wilt zien’ (ook: ‘Wees zelf de verandering die je in de wereld wilt zien’). Mooie spreuk. Daar wil je als bedrijf of organisatie wel mee gezien worden. En dat gebeurt dan ook op grote schaal. In de hele wereld, en dus ook in Nederland. Maar nu komt het: de spreuk is helemaal niet van Mahatma Gandhi. Hij heeft het nooit zo gezegd. Verschillende mensen zijn al op zoek gegaan naar de oorsprong van de spreuk. Steeds loopt het spoor dood, ook voor echte Gandhi-watchers. In 2011 stond in de New York Times een artikel waarin de quote als een hoax werd bestempeld. We need not wait to see what others do.’ Tja, dit citaat is natuurlijk wat te fors voor in een powerpoint-presentatie van een bedrijf. En het is al helemaal te fors voor een Facebook-tegeltje. Is het terecht om de passage terug te brengen tot ‘Be the change you wish to see in the world’, de Engelse weergave van ‘Wees de verandering die je in de wereld wilt zien’? Nee hè.
