Falling in love at a coffee shop movie

This week’s music review is a bit late due to technical difficulties (lack of Internet mainly) but we will be reviewing “Falling In Love In A Coffee Shop” by Landon Pigg and a cover done by Daniela Andrade!

Let’s take a listen to the original!

Landon Pigg is an American actor and also a singer-songwriter. He’s from Nashville and is most likely known for playing a small role in The Perks of Being a Wallflower. As an artist, Pigg has released 3 albums, 4 EPs, 7 singles, and 3 movie soundtrack appearances. He’s had many tours but has not toured since 2010 for his latest album. In 2014, he played his first live show in 3 years. Instead, Pigg was more active on his Youtube channel where he posts acoustic cover sessions. This is most likely due to the fact that he had shut down his own official website and has decided to use Youtube instead.

This song was released in 2007 and was #33 on the Adult Pop Top 40 chart, #13 on the Adult Contemporary chart, and #93 on the Hot 100 chart in that year.

With a surprisingly clear timbre, Pigg’s vocals complement this song quite well. Though there are no dramatic swoops or vocalizations in this song, the vocals in this lyrics perfectly and creates a serene mood – quite like one in a coffee shop. The instrumental is wonderful because not only does it use an acoustic guitar band but also incorporates a cello as well – something that is not seen in even most acoustic songs. The cello beautifully complements both the lyrics and the vocals.

This song gets a 8/10. Though it is not my favorite acoustic song, the song itself is quite beautiful – both lyrically and musically.

Now let’s move on to the cover!

Daniela Andrade is a Youtuber who performs acoustic covers that has garnered much popularity from the Youtube community. She is known for the unique timbre of her voice and the simple yet beautiful acoustic covers she performs. She is based in Canada and has done multiple collaborations with other Youtube cover artists.

She is currently touring in Europe and has 4 EPs (Digital Age, Sound, Come Around, Shore) which she calls chapters so to present the phases she has gone through as a musician and a person. Each “chapter” has a film attached to it that was recorded in the span of 6 weeks in Africa.

This song certainly does test Andrade’s vocal range since it dips lower than what she can reach but she still is able to pull of the vocals in this song. What is interesting about this cover is the layering of pre-recorded instrumental and vocal tracks on this live recording of the cover. Playing live to a pre-recorded instrumental and vocal track certainly has it challenges but she was somewhat able to pull it off here. Though the pre-recorded vocal track in combination with her live voice was done in order to imitate what was done in the original song, it was very unlike Andrade (since she does not use this technique in her other covers) and didn’t work well in this cover.

This song gets a 6/10 because, while her voice is quite lovely and I like the simplicity of this cover, this isn’t exactly one of her best covers nor does this song showcase the extent of her vocal ability.
