General Information about Florida DMV Change of Address

Customers are required to renew their Florida Driver’s license or ID card every 8 years. You can see the expiration date on the credential. Florida driver licenses, as well as ID cardholders, may do up to 18 months’ renewal of their credential before the expiration date.

Drivers can replace their driver’s license or ID card before its expiration if the credentials are stolen, lost or they require an update. The following may need a replacement credential:

  • If the address change, a 30-day window is given to Florida driver’s license or ID cardholders to update the credential with their new address.
  • In the case of a change of name, Florida driver’s license or ID cardholders are required to effect an update to their name with the Social Security Administration before they update their name on the credential and they are also required to show an original or certified court order of marriage certificate when they are applying to update their name on their driver license or ID card.
  • If a driver’s license or ID card is stolen or lost.
  • If a customer wishes to update or add a designation or other information contained on the credential.

Note: Effective from February 15, 2021, customers that have Class E driver licenses that have been expired for over 12 months will be asked to write a Class E exam and vision exam before they can get a valid Class E driver license. The Class E knowledge exam may be finished up to 12 months before they apply for a Class E driver’s license. If the time between completion of the Class E knowledge exam and the time for applying for a Class E driver’s license pass 12 months, there will be a need for retesting of the knowledge exam before issuance.

Change of Address: Florida Tax Agencies

Since Florida doesn’t charge personal income tax, all that you need to be concerned about is to obtain a change of address in Florida for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to bring their records up to date. Usually, you can wait and make use of your new address when you file taxes the next year. But, if you are expecting a refund or important information from the IRS, you can change your address via phone or in person.

You can fill a form 8822 and send it to the IRS via mail with your new address. The Internal Revenue Service may take almost 6 weeks to perform your change of address, so it is important to also get our address changed with USPS to get all of your forwarded IRS tax mail at your new residence.

If you would rather not use Form 8822, you can let the IRS know in writing with your full name, Social Security number, old address new address, and signature. You can find your nearest branch using this tool if you choose an in-person approach. You can locate the nearest Florida IRS office to check in person, organize a phone call, or arrange another type of appointment.

Before you move to Florida, you should also consult the new utility providers that serve your area. Usually, your new location will have information about local utilities on its website. For your cell phone, cable services, and internet, you can update your address on each of their websites and quickly transfer your services.

Your auto insurance provider determines your rate depending on where you reside since some zip codes have various rates of accidents, vehicle break-ins, and traffic. Due to this, insurance companies ask you to update your address as part of your insurance contract. Fortunately, you can do this conveniently by calling your insurance company or checking their website.
