Few movies can make audiences feel as good as a romantic comedy. Not only do they reinforce the power of love, but they give audiences hope and a few laughs along the way. Though most people think of the nineties and early aughts a the prime time for romcoms, there have been several movies that have come out in the last five years that have refreshed the genre.

The movies of now feature more diverse casts and plots -- from virtual meet-cutes to an update of a nineties classic. Here is a list of some of the best romantic comedies of the last five years.

Updated on February 16th, 2021 by Kristen Palamara: Romantic comedies continue to be a popular and adorable genre filled with characters meeting and falling in love, and while there's a particular setup to each rom-com some recent and more modern rom-coms are trying different and creative setups while their characters are more representative of millennials and a younger audience.  Modern rom-com characters still live fantastical lives filled with meet-cutes and deus ex machina moments while also reckoning with more serious themes like not being successful at work, being rejected, and being single after a long relationship.

Set It Up (2018)

Set It Up Charlie and Harper

Set It Up is a hilarious and romantic Netflix movie that follows two young millennial characters who work in the same building. Harper (Zoey Deutch) and Charlie (Glen Powell) are both overworked and underpaid assistants that do anything and everything for their bosses in hopes of finally getting a promotion in the future.

The two meet and come up with a plan to set up their bosses (Lucy Liu and Taye Diggs) to start dating and continue to make their relationship run smoothly so they can finally have some normal work hours. As with any rom-com, of course, Charlie and Harper become closer throughout the movie as well.

The Personal History Of David Copperfield (2019)

The Personal History of David Copperfield Cast Dev Patel Tilda Swinton
Peter Capaldi Ben Whishaw Hugh Laurie

Dev Patel stars as David Copperfield in this delightful reimagining of Charles Dickens' classic novel "David Copperfield" which is a bright and hilarious version of the story. The movie follows Copperfield from his childhood days as an orphan into his adulthood as he blossoms into a successful writer with fantastical imagery throughout the movie.

The diverse cast has great chemistry with each other from Hugh Laurie as Mr. Dick to Rosalind Eleazar as Agnes Wickfield and particularly the chemistry between Agnes Wickfield and David Copperfield makes this movie a great rom-com.

The Incredible Jessica James (2017)

Jessica and Boone sit on a picnic blanket in The Incredible Jessica James

The Incredible Jessica James is a Netflix rom-com that follows two people Jessica (Jessica Williams) and Boone (Chris O'Dowd) who meet and become friends with the possibility of becoming more than friends. Both characters are going through a tough break-up and agree to become friends to help each other navigate the weird world of being single after a long relationship.

It's a fun but deep rom-com about reckoning with relatable feelings of being out of place and feelings of rejection through a romantic lens.

When We First Met (2018)

Noah peeking out from behind decorations in When We First Met

When We First Met is a Netflix rom-com about Noah (Adam DeVine), who has been in love with Avery (Alexandra Daddario) since the two met and became friends years before. He's given the chance to travel back in time and tell her how he feels before she agrees to marry another man.

It's a pretty basic setup that's been done before in the rom-com genre, but the movie is surprisingly charming and the introduction of another woman, Carrie (Shelley Hennig), into the story gives a new twist on the rom-com setup.

The Lovebirds (2020)

The Lovebirds Leilani and Jibran

The Lovebirds is a Netflix rom-com starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani as a couple who started out strong with their relationship, but the two find that their relationship is stale after years of being together. They're about to go to a friend's party when they decide to separate, only to have a man claiming to be law enforcement jump in their car and kill a man.

The action throws Leilani (Rae) and Jibran (Nanjiani) into a night where they have to fight for their survival while also reckon with their relationship falling apart or find a way to fall back into love with each other.

What Men Want (2019)

What Men Want

This film is a reboot of the early 2000s film What Women Want, only this time it follows a successful sports agent named Ali, played by Empire's Taraji P. Henson after she starts to hear men's thoughts due to a potion from a shaman. Not only does this potion reveal the sexism and racism of Ali's workplace but it allows her to get a leg up on her career.

The film is a fun ride, and it uses the telepathy trick very well. Henson is a great leading lady -- her strong-willed determination and softness make her instantly likable. With a great supporting cast that includes Tracy Morgan, Erykah Badu, Max Greenfield, and Richard Roundtree, What Men Want is a solid update on a classic.

To All The Boys I've Loved Before (2018)

To All The Boys I've Loved Before

This Netflix original follows a teen named Lara Jean. She writes a series of letters to the boys in her class she's had crushes on, and when some of her letters are sent to the recipient, Lara Jean's life gets turned upside down especially after one of her crushes approaches her.

To All The Boys I've Loved Before is based on a book series of the same name by Jenny Han. The film received good reviews, not only for the diverse casting but for featuring relatable characters and subverting conventional teen rom-com.

The Longshot (2019)

The Longshot Seth Rogen Charlize Theron

The Longshot features Knocked Up alum Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron. Theron plays Charlotte Field, the U.S. Secretary of State, who decides to throw her hat in the ring for president after learning the current man in the white house has no plans to run for a second term.

She needs a speechwriter, so she hires a man named Fred Flarksy (Rogen) whom she used to babysit, and romance ensues. Rogen and Theron have great chemistry as they navigate this interesting take on a rom-com, which plays with conventional standards by making Theron's character the older of the pair.

Isn't It Romantic (2019)

Isn't It Romantic

Isn't It Romantic was groundbreaking as one of the only movies to feature a plus-size woman as the love interest. In the film, Rebel Wilson plays Natalie, an architect who wakes up in a stereotypical romantic comedy after being knocked unconscious. She's always hated rom-coms, but realizes the only way out is through.

Soon she begins a relationship with a wealthy man named Blake (played by Chris Hemsworth) and her best friend Josh (Adam Devine) begins dating a yoga instructor named Isabella (Priyanka Chopra). Not only does the film put the stuffy conventions of rom-coms on display, but it also leads with an important lesson for any viewer.

Last Christmas (2019)

Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding holding each other in Last Christmas

Director Paul Feig's most recent flick, Last Christmas follows a down-on-her-luck Kate (played by Game of Thrones' Emilia Clarke) who meets a man named Tom (Henry Golding). Though Kate thinks Tom is too good to be true and mocks his generous nature, she begins to take part in his activities, such as volunteering for a homeless shelter.

Having Tom in her life inspires Kate to strive for her dreams of being a singer, and generally get her life together. The film shows how one person can truly have an impact on another, and how helping others can build a person up. Clark and Golding were praised for their chemistry, and the film received generally good reviews.

Always Be My Maybe (2019)

Ali Wong and Randall Park in Always Be My Maybe

Another Netflix original, Always Be My Maybe follows childhood friends Sasha and Marcus as they reconnect after Sasha returns to San Francisco to open a new restaurant. Though they argue initially, the pair end up spending time together as Marcus takes Sasha to different places of their childhood.

This film is one of the only films in recent history to feature a mostly Asian cast -- leads Sasha and Marcus are played by comedian Ali Wong and Fresh Of The Boat's Randall Park, respectively. It also features a hilarious cameo from Keanu Reeves and has Hawaii 5-0's Daniel Dae Kim in a supporting role.

The Big Sick (2017)

Kumail-Nanjiani-The-Big-Sick

Written by husband and wife duo Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, The Big Sick follows a fictionalized version of Nanjiani as he begins a relationship with a fictionalized version of Gordon. When she learns that his parents were trying to set him up in an arranged marriage, she breaks up with him. Shortly after, he finds out that she's been hospitalized.

Though they are no longer together, Nanjiani refuses to leave her side and he begins to form a relationship with her parents, played by Holly Hunter and Ray Romano. The Big Sick manages to infuse moments of levity as it deals with issues of interracial relationships, life-threatening illness, rejection, and more. The film was so well received that is was nominated for an Academy Award for best screenplay.

Crazy Rich Asians (2018)

Crazy Rich Asians

In a classic tale of star-crossed lovers, Rachel (played by Fresh Of The Boat's Constance Wu) travels to Singapore with her boyfriend Nick (Henry Golding) for a friend's wedding. There she learns that Nick's family is incredibly wealthy and right away most of his family begins to look down on Rachel for not being the same economic status as them.

Though Nick wants to be with Rachel despite his family, she struggles against Nick's domineering mother, Eleanor. Part of what makes the film so successful is the relatability of Rachel's struggle -- she wants to be with Nick but doesn't want him to sacrifice his family. Wu plays the part well, infusing Rachel with softness and strength, and the chemistry between her and Golding adds to the movie's appeal.

The Half Of It (2020)

Leah Lewis and Alexxis Lemire in The Half of It

One of the most recent entries on this list, The Half Of It follows loner Ellie Chu. She writes term papers and book reports for money. One day she's approached by football player Paul who asks Ellie for help writing love letters to a girl named Aster.

Ellie, who is in love with Aster herself initially refuses but eventually agrees. She and Paul become friends despite both caring for Aster. The unconventional friendship between Ellie and Paul is what gives this film its hook, and the love triangle will leave viewers wondering who should end up with whom.

Love, Simon (2018)

Simon and Blue in Love, Simon

This groundbreaking film follows high school student Simon. He is gay but is closeted, and he begins an online correspondence with another student at the school, who uses the pseudonym Blue. After a fellow student finds out about Simon's messages, he threatens to blackmail him if he doesn't help him get a date with one of Simon's friends.

As Simon deals with being blackmailed, he continues to try to find out who Blue actually is. This heartwarming film shows the realities of the LGBTQ+ community, from the harm of being outed to the struggle to find love. However, it is filled with moments of levity, especially amongst Simon and his group of friends.
